This position serves as Pilot-in-Command or Second-in-Command of the National Science Foundation (NSF)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) aircraft in support of worldwide research projects, which frequently necessitate airplane operations in turbulence, minimal instrument weather, at night, at low altitudes, over water and/or over rough terrain.

Operations may be conducted worldwide in various locations where living accommodations and medical facilities are substandard, and airplane facilities are limited. This position supervises the Research Aviation Facility (RAF) flight crew.

Where You Will Work:

The Research Aviation Facility (RAF). RAF is located at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (KBJC) in Broomfield, CO, and operates a highly modified Gulfstream V and a Lockheed C-130Q.

The RAF is a national resource for the advancement of airborne research in geosciences, with a focus on the safe operation of research aircraft in a wide variety of challenging sampling environments.

Hiring Range : $170,000 - $190,000; this position is eligible for field pay and hardship pay when applicable.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be (a) a U.S. citizen; (b) lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or (c) a protected individual as defined by 8 USC1324b(a)(3).
  • Some or all of the work in this position description must be performed on-site at UCAR campuses and/or remote field sites that are domestic and/or international.
  • Willingness to travel for up to 42 consecutive days within the U.S. and internationally.
  • Willingness to travel up to 16 weeks per year.
  • Must hold FAA Airline Transport Certificate with Multi-Engine Land Rating.
  • Hold and be able to maintain an FAA First Class Medical (able to renew every six months as necessary).
  • Maintain a valid United States Passport with no travel restrictions.

Key responsibilities of the position:

  • Acts as pilot-in-command (PIC) or second-in-command (SIC) of the NSF/NCAR C-130 and/or GV aircraft on various worldwide research deployments.
  • Conducts flight operations in accordance with FAA, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), and other applicable directives, regulations, and instructions.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes all airborne research profiles to ensure both safe and successful mission accomplishment. As pilot-in-command, is directly responsible for and the final authority as to the operation of the aircraft.
  • Coordinates aircraft logistical support, ensuring appropriate facilities are in place to accomplish assigned mission requirements.
  • Ensures NSF/NCAR aircraft are airworthy and that required research installations comply with weight and balance and other safety-related issues.
  • Remains current and proficient in operating procedures for each assigned aircraft. Additionally, keeps abreast of all aviation-related rules and regulations that impact safe flight operations.
  • Reviews and evaluates the safety and feasibility of proposed research projects.
  • Prepares correspondence to the NSF to obtain foreign country diplomatic clearances.
  • Regularly reviews policies and procedures related to flight operations. Responsible for keeping these current and in line with appropriate practices for safe and secure research aviation operations.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert for RAF flight operations and advises RAF Facility Manager and other internal and external stakeholders on facility-wide issues related to aviation operations.
  • Oversees the facility's Safety Management System. Includes compliance with IS-BAO as well and completion of applicable IS-BAO protocols for the facility.
  • Directly supervises the RAF flight crew
  • Responsible for all participants flying on NCAR-operated aircraft.
  • Oversees training and record keeping for all flight personnel (crew and qualified non-crew members) in accordance with RAF aviation-related policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for evaluating a multitude of information and using all available resources to make critical decisions limiting the operational use of aircraft during research projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED (KSA):

  • Expert knowledge of FAA Regulations that apply to government aircraft flight operations.
  • Expert knowledge of all flight and emergency procedures relevant to the operation of GV and/or C-130 aircraft.
  • Demonstrated skill in the management of aviation-related resources.
  • Demonstrated skill in organizational and administrative processes.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem analysis and decision-making.
  • Ability to conduct field programs with little or no onsite supervision.
  • Ability to provide aviation-related briefings on a variety of subjects to scientific and other non-aviation audiences.
  • Ability to analyze specialized data of a technical nature and solve very complex problems involving in-depth analysis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Desired but not REQUIRED (KSA):

  • Technical fluency with Foreflight (Dispatch, RWA), PlotNG, Arcsky Manuals, Gmail/Drive, and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PPT).)
  • Understanding of IS-BAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) and Safety Management Systems.

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years as a professional pilot with worldwide experience.
  • Must hold a L-382 or L-100 type rating.
  • Total Flight hours: 5,000 airplane pilot hours and Multi-Engine: 2500 hours.
  • Pilot in Command: 1,000 flight hours as pilot-in-command in multi-engine aircraft over 12,500 pounds.

Education & Experience Desired but NOT Required:

  • Gulfstream experience desired.
  • Gulfstream IV/V/G550 flight experience.
  • Expert knowledge of FAA Regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of Public Aircraft Operations (AC 00-1.1B).
  • Demonstrated skill in the management of aviation-related resources (people/aircraft).
  • Demonstrated skill in organizational and administrative processes.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem analysis and decision-making.
  • Ability to conduct field programs with little or no onsite supervision.
  • Ability to provide aviation-related briefings on a variety of subjects to scientific and other non-aviation audiences.
  • Experience in research, flight testing, or special mission operations.
  • Experience with IS-BAO operations and in the IBAC (International Business Aviation Council) inspections.
