Simulator Second in Command (SIC)

Purpose of Position

The Simulator Second in Command is vital to FlightSafety International's training operations, primarily responsible for maintaining current qualifications in assigned aircraft programs. In this role, the SIC acts as the Second-in-Command for both internal and external customer pilots participating in Recurrent, Initial, or generic training courses within the established training curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a competent Second-in-Command (SIC) for clients training in multi-crew aircraft who attend sessions without a flying partner. This role focuses on supporting the pilot and does not involve performing instructional duties.
  • Maintain SIC pilot qualification diligently in accordance with the requirements of all assigned aircraft programs.
  • Ensure SIC qualification is consistently maintained in adherence to FlightSafety International’s Quality Management Systems (QMS) processes and procedures.
  • Keep all required certificates, ratings, and designations current to competently perform duties as an SIC.
  • Act as SIC across various aircraft types for diverse client groups, including those training under Part 142, Part 135, and non-FAA regulations, as required.

Minimum Education

A high school diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency (G.E.D.) is required. This should be complemented by two to three (2-3) years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience

Applicants must possess the following certificates and experience prior to commencing duties as an SIC:

  • Commercial Pilot Certificate with appropriate category, class, and instrument ratings.
  • A minimum of 450 total flight hours.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated fluency in English, encompassing strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to speak, understand, read, and write effectively.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are essential for effective cockpit interaction.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse range of customers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Proven ability to adapt effectively to dynamic schedules and operate calmly and efficiently in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in a second language may be necessary at certain Learning Centers to address specific client needs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires the employee to regularly use hands for fine manipulation, handle objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and engage in verbal communication and hearing. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and possess the ability to taste or smell. Specific physical motions essential to the role include:

  1. Reaching, exerting pressure, and manipulating rudder/anti-torque controls with both feet.
  2. Reaching and manipulating numerous controls within the simulator.
  3. Entering and exiting the simulator via the provided ramp.
  4. Safely exiting a malfunctioned simulator while in a severely pitched attitude.

Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

While performing job duties, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. Occasional exposure to high, precarious places, outside weather conditions, wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, extreme cold/heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration may occur. The typical noise level in the work environment is moderate.
