Aviation Plane Captain
Job Overview
The Aviation Plane Captain is responsible for the proficient execution of aircraft handling, servicing, and daily/turnaround inspections. This role involves conducting pre-operational checks, fueling ground support equipment, and providing essential technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to personnel in Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications. A commitment to safety, procedural adherence, and operational efficiency is paramount.
Essential Responsibilities
- Performs duties consistent with Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
- Conducts daily and turnaround inspections in accordance with established procedures.
- Initiates and completes all required maintenance forms accurately.
- Performs aircraft fuel sampling and servicing as per established procedures.
- Manages aircraft launch and recovery operations.
- Serves as the aircraft taxi director during launch and recovery phases.
- Operates aircraft towing equipment and acts as a brake rider when necessary.
- Secures aircraft through tying down and covering, following established procedures.
- Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to team members.
- Utilizes two-way communication equipment effectively during operations.
- Ensures strict compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Maintains adherence to all general and industrial safety rules and regulations applicable to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
- Safeguards government and company-owned equipment, ensuring its security and preservation.
- Delivers courteous and professional customer service to all stakeholders.
- Operates portable firefighting equipment when required.
- Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the work center.
- Performs other qualified duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations is required.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License is essential.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain any necessary government/company licenses, qualifications, certifications, and clearances.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, understanding, and communicating in the English language, including the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
- Thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and standard operational safety requirements for aircraft.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, carrying, balancing, and reaching above shoulder level, with the capacity to push or pull weight up to 70 pounds.
- Possesses close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Normal hearing range is required.
- Must complete the required training program and be certified in writing as a Plane Captain. Re-qualification is required semi-annually.
- Must be qualified on all assigned types, models, and series (T/M/S) of aircraft.
- Must be available to work all assigned shifts and schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with F-18 (A-F), EA-18G, E-2C, F-16, and/or MH60 aircraft is strongly preferred.
- Relevant licensing and certifications including:
- Hazardous Waste Communications Training
- FOD and TCP Awareness Training
- ISO 9001-2000 Program Awareness
- Operational Risk Management (ORM) Training
- Experience operating support equipment such as tow tractors, nitrogen servicing carts, engine wash carts, and engine start units.
- Willingness to handle hazardous materials in the performance of assigned duties.
- Demonstrated ability in eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
- Potential requirement to use a respirator.
Compensation and Benefits
The starting hourly rate of pay is $50.66. Upon meeting mandatory qualifications as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the hourly rate will increase to $55.75.
