Position Overview

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position for an Airplane Pilot (GS-2181-13) within the Illinois National Guard (IL 126). The incumbent is responsible for piloting unit-equipped aircraft and performing administrative tasks in support of the Air Operations program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Execute flight procedures and standard maneuvers across all weather conditions.
  • Perform comprehensive flight preparation, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, flight plan filing, and weight/loading verification.
  • Ensure crew and passenger safety through pre-flight briefings and strict adherence to aircraft flight manual procedures.
  • Monitor flight progress, coordinate with ground control, and execute emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Complete post-flight requirements, including log maintenance, flight reports, and coordination with maintenance personnel.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative and Supervisor of Flying (SOF), ensuring safe and efficient mission accomplishment.
  • Design technical aircrew training plans and develop deliberate unit planning for wartime and national taskings.
  • Administer flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in compliance with Air Force, Air National Guard, and OSHA directives.

Qualifications and Requirements

Educational Requirements

An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is mandatory. A graduate degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional military education is preferred. Official transcripts must be provided.

Experience and Certifications

  • Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) is required.
  • Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or equivalent military aviation school certifications.
  • General Experience: Minimum of one year of on-the-job experience at the grade immediately below GS-12.
  • Specialized Experience: At least two years of experience in civilian or military aviation programs, demonstrating proficiency in piloting, instructing, mission planning, and safety program management.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 level.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain membership in the Illinois National Guard.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Selectees must wear a military uniform.
  • Must maintain medical standards required for USAF military pilots.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment regarding domestic violence convictions.
  • May require irregular/overtime hours, travel, and drug testing.
  • Mandatory participation in direct deposit.

  3. Federal re-employment eligible individuals.
  4. Applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and join the ILNG.
