Position Summary
The Airplane Pilot performs critical flying duties and administrative responsibilities in support of the Air Operations program. The incumbent operates unit-equipped (UE) aircraft for both tactical and non-tactical missions, adhering to stringent safety standards and mission requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military fighter aircraft, utilizing precision instrument flight techniques and navigational aids.

Execute flight operations within specified parameters, including all-weather conditions and point-to-point travel.

Manage comprehensive flight preparation, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirements, weight distribution, and crew briefings.

Ensure operational safety by monitoring aircraft performance, communicating with ground control, and executing emergency procedures as necessary.

Conduct post-flight activities, including logbook maintenance, reporting, and maintenance coordination.

Serve as the Air Commander’s representative in the capacity of Supervisor of Flying (SOF).

Develop and coordinate aircrew training plans, wartime planning, and unit safety programs in compliance with Air Force, ANG, and OSHA directives.
Qualification Requirements

Education:
Mandatory undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. A graduate degree is considered optimum.

Certifications:
Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications from accredited civilian programs OR aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools.

General Experience:
Minimum of one year of on-the-job experience in the grade (or comparable military rank) immediately below the next higher level of GS-12.

Specialized Experience:
Minimum of two years of experience in civilian or military aviation programs. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in piloting and instructing fixed-wing, rotary, or remotely piloted aircraft, as well as extensive experience in mission planning, navigation, meteorology, safety program administration, and combat/non-combat tactics.

Time-In-Grade:
Current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 level.
Conditions of Employment

Membership in the Illinois National Guard is required prior to the effective date of placement.

Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Completion of USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) is mandatory.

Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.

Position requires the wear of a military uniform and potentially irregular, overtime, or after-hours work.

Subject to drug testing and background investigations.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

Candidates must be registered with the Selective Service if born after December 31, 1959.

The position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment regarding domestic violence convictions.
