Job Summary

This is a National Guard Title 32 excepted service position for an Airplane Pilot (GS-2181-13) with the Illinois National Guard (IL 126). The incumbent is responsible for piloting unit-equipped airplanes and performing administrative duties in support of the Air Operations program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Execute flight procedures and maneuvers in all weather conditions within established flight parameters.
  • Prepare for flights, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, weight and balance verification, and preflight inspections.
  • Ensure crew and passenger safety through briefings, coordination with ground control, and strict adherence to aircraft flight manuals and emergency procedures.
  • Complete post-flight requirements, including maintenance coordination, logbook maintenance, and flight reporting.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing duties as Supervisor of Flying (SOF).
  • Develop comprehensive training plans, unit planning for taskings, and oversee ground, explosive, and flying safety programs.

Requirements and Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Must be a member of the Illinois National Guard or willing to become a T32 Dual Status Technician.
  • Must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or equivalent military aviation certifications.
  • Must have graduated from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must possess at least two years of specialized experience in civilian or military aviation, including piloting/instructing in relevant aircraft and mission planning.
  • Must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the GS-12 level for current Federal employees).

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Must maintain military medical standards required for USAF military pilots.
  • Requirement to wear a military uniform and serve in the specified military grade (O4 or below).
  • Subject to drug testing, irregular/overtime hours, and potential travel.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment regarding domestic violence convictions.
  • Successful completion of a trial period and federal background investigation may be required.
