Job Title: Airplane Pilot (Title 32)

Position: GS-2181-13 | Illinois National Guard (IL 126)

Position Summary

This is a National Guard Title 32 excepted service position. The selected candidate will pilot unit-equipped (UE) airplanes and perform essential administrative tasks to support the Air Operations program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Execute flight procedures and standard maneuvers across all weather conditions.
  • Perform comprehensive flight planning, including weather analysis, chart study, fuel requirements, and flight plan filing.
  • Conduct pre-flight inspections, weight and balance verification, and passenger/crew safety briefings.
  • Maintain operational safety by adhering to flight manuals, coordinating with ground units, and managing emergency procedures.
  • Complete post-flight requirements, including log entries, flight reports, and maintenance coordination.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative as Supervisor of Flying (SOF), ensuring mission efficiency.
  • Design training plans and develop unit deliberate planning for national and base tasking.
  • Administer unit flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in accordance with Air Force, ANG, and OSHA directives.

Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Mandatory: Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Optimum: Graduate degree from an accredited civilian academic institution or equivalent professional military education school.
  • Requirement: Official transcripts must be provided.

Certification Requirements

Candidates must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications from accredited civilian programs OR aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools. Proof of certification is required with the application.

General and Specialized Experience

  • Must have one year of on-the-job experience at a grade level comparable to the GS-12 level.
  • Must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the GS-12 level for current Federal employees).
  • Must have at least two years of specialized experience in civilian or military aviation programs, including piloting or instructing in specified main-frame military aircraft.
  • Experience must encompass mission planning, flight theory, navigation, meteorology, safety program management, and instructional techniques.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a member of the Illinois National Guard in the military grade of O4 or below.
  • Must wear a military uniform.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Must have graduated from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must maintain medical standards equivalent to USAF military pilots.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment regarding domestic violence convictions.
  • Subject to drug testing, trial periods, and background investigations.
  • May require irregular or overtime hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Direct deposit participation is mandatory.
