Job Summary

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service position (GS-2181-13) for an Airplane Pilot with the IL 126, National Guard (Position Description Number D0253P02). The selected individual will pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing administrative duties to support the Air Operations program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Execute flight procedures and maneuvers within defined parameters across all weather conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive flight preparations, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, weight and balance verification, and crew briefings.
  • Ensure flight safety by adhering to technical manuals, coordinating with ground control, and executing emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Complete post-flight requirements, including maintenance logging, reporting, and equipment inspections.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing duties as Supervisor of Flying (SOF).
  • Design training plans, develop unit deliberate planning for wartime/national tasking, and administer safety programs in accordance with Air Force, ANG, and OSHA directives.

Qualifications

Education Requirements

An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is mandatory. A graduate degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional military education school is preferred. Official transcripts must be provided.

Certification Requirements

Applicants must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications from accredited civilian programs or aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools. Documentation must be provided with the application.

Experience Requirements

  • General Experience: Minimum of one year of on-the-job experience in the grade (or comparable military rank) immediately below the next higher level of GS-12.
  • Time-In-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the GS-12 level) by the closing date. An SF-50 is required.
  • Specialized Experience: At least two years of experience in civilian or military aviation programs, including piloting or instructing in specific fixed-wing, rotary, or remotely piloted aircraft. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in mission planning, navigation, safety program management, and flight instruction.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain membership in the Illinois National Guard in the required military grade (Officers only, NTE O4).
  • Must have graduated from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Must maintain the medical standards required of USAF military pilots.
  • Mandatory participation in direct deposit.
  • Required to wear a military uniform.
  • Must comply with the Lautenberg Amendment (Domestic Violence Misdemeanor restrictions).
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Subject to federal employment suitability background investigations, drug testing, and potential trial periods.
  • Availability for irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel for official duties.
