Job Title: Airplane Pilot (Title 32) - GS-2181-13

Organization: IL 126, National Guard

Position Summary: The National Guard is seeking an Airplane Pilot (Title 32) to pilot unit-equipped (UE) aircraft and perform administrative duties in support of the Air Operations program. This is an excepted service position requiring membership in the Illinois National Guard.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced, single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions utilizing precision instrument flight techniques.
  • Execute standard maneuvers and flight procedures across all weather conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive flight preparations, including route planning, weather analysis, fuel requirements, weight distribution checks, and crew/passenger briefings.
  • Ensure safe aircraft operation by adhering to technical manuals, coordinating with ground control, and executing emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Complete post-flight requirements, including maintenance coordination, logbook documentation, and flight reporting.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing Supervisor of Flying (SOF) duties.
  • Design aircrew training plans and develop unit deliberate planning for wartime and national tasking.
  • Administer unit flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in compliance with Air Force, ANG, and OSHA directives.

Requirements and Conditions of Employment

  • Must be or willing to become an Illinois National Guard member.
  • Must maintain the military grade listed in the announcement (Officers only, up to O4).
  • Possession of a Top Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
  • Mandatory graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT).
  • Must meet USAF medical standards for military pilots.
  • Requirement to wear a military uniform.
  • Compliance with the Lautenberg Amendment regarding domestic violence convictions.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • May be subject to drug testing, irregular/overtime hours, and travel requirements.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications and Education

  • Education: An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution is mandatory; a graduate degree is considered optimum. Official transcripts are required.
  • Certifications: Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or equivalent military aviation school credentials.
  • General Experience: Minimum of one year of experience at the grade level immediately below the GS-13 (GS-12) or comparable military rank. Federal employees must meet 52-week time-in-grade requirements.
  • Specialized Experience: At least two years of experience in military or civilian aviation programs, including piloting and instructing on specific air-frames, conducting mission planning, supervising aircrew training, and managing aviation safety programs.
