Position Summary

The Airplane Pilot (GS-2181-13) is responsible for piloting unit-equipped (UE) aircraft while performing administrative duties in support of the Air Operations program. The incumbent ensures mission success through precision flight techniques, rigorous mission planning, and adherence to all safety regulations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pilot advanced single or multi-engine military aircraft on tactical and non-tactical missions using precision instrument techniques.
  • Execute standard maneuvers and flight procedures in all weather conditions, including point-to-point domestic and foreign operations.
  • Perform comprehensive flight preparation, including weather analysis, route planning, fuel requirement calculations, flight plan filing, and weight/loading verification.
  • Ensure crew and passenger safety through detailed briefings and strict adherence to aircraft flight manuals and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate with ground control, monitor aircraft performance, and execute corrective actions as required.
  • Complete post-flight activities, including maintaining logs, writing reports, and coordinating maintenance requirements.
  • Serve as the Air Commander’s representative when performing Supervisor of Flying (SOF) duties.
  • Design training plans, develop unit planning for taskings, and administer flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in accordance with Air Force, ANG, and OSHA directives.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Military Membership: Must be a member of the Illinois National Guard and maintain the required military grade (Officers only, up to O4).
  • Education: A mandatory undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is required. A graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • Experience: Must possess at least one year of experience at the GS-12 level (or equivalent) and at least two years of specialized experience in civilian or military aviation programs.
  • Certification: Must possess Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifications or military aviation school certifications.
  • Training: Graduation from USAF or USN Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) is mandatory.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Medical: Must maintain USAF military pilot medical standards.
  • Compliance: Must adhere to the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) and Selective Service registration requirements for males born after 1959.

Conditions of Employment

  • Selectee must wear a military uniform.
  • Position may require irregular, overtime, or weekend/holiday hours.
  • Subject to drug testing and potential background investigation/trial period.
  • Travel via military or commercial air may be required.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
