The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), recognized as the world's largest airline pilot union and the foremost non-governmental aviation safety organization globally, representing over 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines, is seeking a qualified Training & Human Performance Coordinator. Based in the Tysons (McLean), Virginia office, this role is an integral part of the Engineering & Air Safety (E&AS) department.

The Training & Human Performance Coordinator serves as the primary staff liaison for Training and Human Performance policy areas. The Coordinator provides essential expertise, support, and coordination for activities related to human performance, training, human factors, and other assigned disciplines. This position involves acting as a key liaison between the Association and various government, industry, trade, and professional organizations within these domains. Responsibilities also include supporting activities associated with the development and harmonization of worldwide regulatory standards. The Coordinator works in close collaboration with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) and its associated groups, as well as other technical groups and Master Executive Councils (MECs) within the ALPA structure. The Coordinator also participates on a rotational basis in answering calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, which may include hours outside of standard business operations, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required, or an equivalent combination of human performance, training, education, and experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct experience in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance is required.
  • Must possess established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community.
  • A thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and practiced time management abilities are required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel is expected.
  • Must be able to work independently and proactively identify and respond to issues and problems.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types is desired. Additional experience in aviation safety may be substituted for the licensing requirement.
  • Previous employment experience at airlines, the FAA, and/or within the industry segment in a relevant capacity is considered extremely helpful.
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt seamlessly to changing demands is highly valued.
  • Technical writing and presentation skills are beneficial for effectively communicating with Association members and Officers, government and industry representatives and stakeholders, and staff.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described herein are characteristic of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential physical activities. The role constantly involves operating a computer/smartphone/tablet. It regularly requires maintaining a stationary position, moving about the office and local metropolitan area, interpreting communication, and conversing with others. Regular activities include sitting, standing, bending, reaching, moving about the office, and traveling (locally, nationally, and internationally). Occasional bending, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, or moving items (e.g., packing/unpacking cases) may be required. Occasionally, the role requires moving, raising, reaching, and/or retrieving items up to ten (10) pounds. While traveling, the Coordinator may be responsible for moving, raising, reaching, and/or retrieving luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available).

Travel:

Up to 20%; sporadically, travel, local and national, could be as much as 25% of the time.

Compensation and Benefits:

ALPA offers competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits. The projected annual salary range for this position is $96,027.00 – $137,179.00.

Benefits include:

  • A 401k Plan with a Non-Elective Employer Contribution of 12%, plus a 2% contribution into a Market-Based Cash Balance Plan (MBCBP) after 180 days of employment, requiring no employee contribution. Employees may make pre-tax, Roth, and after-tax contributions to the 401(k). The plan permits in-plan Roth conversions and has a 4-year vesting schedule. The MBCBP has a 3-year cliff vesting period.
