Training & Human Performance Coordinator, Engineering & Air Safety

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the world's largest airline pilot union and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization globally, representing over 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Training & Human Performance Coordinator. This key position is based in ALPA's office located in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.

As an integral member of the Engineering & Air Safety (E&AS) department, the Training & Human Performance Coordinator serves as the primary staff focal point and subject matter expert for the Association's Training and Human Performance policy areas. This role requires the provision of specialized expertise and support, coordinating critical activities related to human performance, training, human factors, and other assigned areas. The Coordinator facilitates essential liaison functions between ALPA and various government, industry, trade, and professional organizations relevant to these disciplines. Responsibilities also encompass contributing to activities focused on the development and worldwide harmonization of regulatory standards. Collaboration is essential, working closely with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) and its associated groups, as well as the other technical groups and Master Executive Councils (MECs) within the ALPA structure.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Serving as the staff focal point for Training and Human Performance policy areas.
  • Providing expertise, support, and coordinating activities in human performance, training, and human factors.
  • Acting as a liaison between ALPA and relevant external government, industry, trade, and professional organizations.
  • Contributing to the development and harmonization of global aviation regulatory standards.
  • Collaborating extensively with internal ALPA groups, including the ASO, technical committees, and MECs.
  • Providing rotational support for the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required; or, the equivalent combination of human performance and training, education and experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct professional experience is required in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance.
  • The successful candidate must have established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community.
  • A thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and practiced time management abilities are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel is expected.
  • The ability to work independently and proactively identify and respond to issues and problems is necessary.
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt seamlessly to changing demands is extremely important.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills are required to communicate effectively with Association members and Officers, government and industry representatives and stakeholders, and staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Possession of a pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types is desired. (Note: Additional experience in aviation safety may be considered as a substitute for the licensing requirement).
  • Former employment experience with airlines, the FAA, and/or an industry segment in a relevant capacity is extremely helpful.

Travel: This position requires travel up to 20% of the time. Sporadically, travel, including local and national destinations, could be as much as 25% of the time.

Physical Demands:

The role involves standard office activities, including consistent computer/device operation, maintaining a stationary position, moving within the office and local area, communication (oral and written), and occasional movement, lifting, or carrying of materials or luggage as required for office tasks or travel.
