Training & Human Performance Coordinator

Located in Tysons (McLean), Virginia, the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) is the world's largest airline pilot union, representing over 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines. As the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization globally, ALPA is seeking an experienced Training & Human Performance Coordinator to join its Engineering & Air Safety (E&AS) department at the Tysons office.

This integral role serves as the primary staff focal point for the crucial Training and Human Performance policy areas. The Training & Human Performance Coordinator provides specialized expertise and support, coordinating activities related to human performance, pilot training, human factors, and other assigned disciplines. The position involves acting as a key liaison between ALPA and various government, industry, trade, and professional organizations within these fields. Responsibilities also include contributing to activities focused on the development and harmonization of regulatory standards worldwide. The Coordinator works in close collaboration with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO), its associated groups, and other technical teams and Master Executive Councils (MECs) within the ALPA structure.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the staff focal point for Training and Human Performance policy areas.
  • Provide expertise and support in human performance, training, and human factors.
  • Coordinate activities with government, industry, trade, and professional organizations.
  • Support the development and harmonization of worldwide regulatory standards.
  • Liaise with the ALPA Air Safety Organization, technical groups, and MECs.
  • Proactively identify and respond to issues and problems independently.
  • On a rotational basis, answer calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or the equivalent combination of human performance, training, education, and experience is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct experience in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance is required.
  • Must possess established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community.
  • A thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and practiced time management are required.
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt seamlessly to changing demands is extremely important.
  • Technical writing and presentation skills are needed to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including Association members, Officers, government and industry representatives, and staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types is desired. Additional experience in aviation safety may be substituted for the licensing requirement.
  • Former employment at airlines, the FAA, and/or the industry segment in a relevant capacity is extremely helpful.

Software:

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.

Travel:

Travel is required up to 20% of the time. Sporadically, travel, both local and national, could increase to as much as 25% of the time.

Physical Demands:

The position requires constant operation of a computer/smartphone/tablet. The incumbent is regularly required to maintain a stationary position; move about the office and local metropolitan area; determine what others have said or written; and converse with others and exchange accurate information. Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and travel (locally, nationally, and internationally). Occasionally may include bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving items up to ten (10) pounds. While traveling, the incumbent may be responsible for moving luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs., potentially without assistance. Salary:

The projected annual salary range for this position is $96,027.00 – $137,179.00.

Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are not provided for this position.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. ALPA is a member-driven, staff-supported union with two internal professional unions.
