The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the world's largest airline pilot union and non-governmental aviation safety organization representing over 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines, seeks a highly qualified and experienced Training & Human Performance Coordinator to join its team in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.
As a vital contributor to the Engineering & Air Safety (E&AS) department, the Training & Human Performance Coordinator serves as the primary staff resource for Training and Human Performance policy areas. This role involves providing expert knowledge, coordinating activities related to human performance, pilot training, human factors, and other assigned disciplines. The coordinator acts as a key liaison between the Association and various governmental, industry, trade, and professional bodies within these domains. Responsibilities also encompass activities supporting the development and harmonization of global regulatory standards. The coordinator works closely with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO), its associated groups, other technical departments, and Master Executive Councils (MECs) across the ALPA structure.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required, or an equivalent combination of human performance and training education and experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years of direct experience in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance is mandatory.
- Established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community are required.
- Must possess a thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
- Excellent organizational skills and proven time management abilities are necessary.
- The ability to learn quickly and adapt seamlessly to changing demands is extremely important.
- Technical writing and presentation skills are required to communicate effectively with Association members and Officers, government and industry representatives and stakeholders, and staff.
- The ability to work independently and proactively identify and respond to issues and problems is expected.
- On a rotational basis, the coordinator answers calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types is desired. Additional experience in aviation safety may be substituted for the licensing requirement.
- Previous employment at airlines, the FAA, and/or within a relevant industry segment is extremely helpful.
Travel:
Up to 20% travel may be required. Sporadically, travel (local and national) could reach as much as 25% of the time.
Work Environment:
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. ALPA is a member-driven, staff-supported union with two internal professional unions.
Physical Demands:
The role requires the ability to constantly operate a computer/smartphone/tablet. Regularly maintaining a stationary position, moving about the office and local metropolitan area, interpreting information, and conversing with others to exchange accurate information are necessary. Regular sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and moving about the office and during travel are expected. Occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving objects up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.) may occur. While traveling, the ability to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. is required (assistance may not always be available).
Compensation & Benefits:
ALPA offers competitive salaries and exceptional benefits. The projected annual salary range for this position is $96,027.00 – $137,179.00. Benefits include:
- 401k Plan with Non-Elective Employer Contribution of 12% plus 2% contribution into a Market-Based Cash Balance Plan (MBCBP) after 180 days of employment. No employee contribution is required. Employees may make pre-tax, Roth, and after-tax contributions to the 401(k). The plan permits in-plan Roth conversions and has a 4-year vesting schedule. The MBCBP has a 3-year cliff vesting period.
