This position serves as Pilot-in-command (PIC) or Second-in-Command (SIC) of National Science Foundation (NSF)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) aircraft in support of worldwide research projects, which frequently necessitate airplane operations in turbulence, minimal instrument weather, at night, at low altitudes, over water, and over rough terrain.

Operations may be conducted worldwide in various locations where diverse living accommodations, medical facilities, and aircraft facilities may be found.

Where You Will Work:

The Research Aviation Facility (RAF) is located at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (KBJC) in Broomfield, CO, and operates a highly modified Gulfstream V and a Lockheed C-130Q.

The RAF is a national resource for the advancement of airborne research in geosciences, with a focus on the safe operation of research aircraft in a wide variety of challenging sampling environments.

The NSF/NCAR aircraft, together with their available instrumentation, offer a level of sophistication and operational capabilities that are not generally available for NSF programs elsewhere.

Job Type : In-Person - Some or all of the work in this position description must be performed on-site at UCAR campuses and/or remote field sites that are domestic and/or international.

Position Type & Term: Full-time, Regular

Hiring Range: $145,000 - $160,000 USD Annually + field pay and hardship pay when applicable.

Job Requirements:

  • Maintain a valid United States Passport with no travel restrictions.
  • Have the ability to travel domestically or internationally for up to 16 weeks per year.
  • Willingness to travel for up to 42 consecutive days within the U.S. and internationally.
  • Must be available to work on-site at the RAF (located at KBJC) and/or at remote field sites that are domestic/international.
  • Must be (a) a U.S. citizen; (b) lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; or (c) a protected individual as defined by 8 USC1324b(a)(3).
  • Must be able to maintain an FAA First Class Medical (and renew every six months as necessary).

Key responsibilities of the position :

  • Acts as pilot-in-command (PIC) or second-in-command (SIC) of the NSF/NCAR C-130 and/or Gulfstream V aircraft on various worldwide research deployments.
  • As pilot-in-command, is directly responsible for and the final authority as to the operation of the aircraft.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes all airborne research profiles to ensure both safe and successful mission accomplishment.
  • Assists in administering the facility Safety Management System.
  • Coordinates aircraft logistical support, ensuring appropriate facilities are in place to accomplish assigned mission requirements.
  • Remains current and proficient in operating procedures for each assigned aircraft.
  • Ensures NSF/NCAR aircraft are airworthy and that required research installations comply with weight and balance and other safety-related issues.
  • Reviews and evaluates the safety and feasibility of proposed research projects.
  • Prepares correspondence to the NSF to obtain foreign country diplomatic clearances.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED (KSA):

  • Expert knowledge of FAA Regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of all flight and emergency procedures relevant to the operation of GV and/or C-130 aircraft.
  • Demonstrated skill in the management of aviation-related resources.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem analysis and decision-making.
  • Ability to conduct field programs with little or no onsite supervision.
  • Ability to provide aviation-related briefings on a variety of subjects to scientific audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but not REQUIRED (KSA):

  • Technical fluency with Foreflight (Dispatch, RWA), PlotNG, Arcsky Manuals, Gmail/Drive, and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel,PPT).)
  • Understanding of ISBAO and Safety Management Systems.

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of professional aviation experience .
  • Must hold a violation-free FAA Airline Transport Certificate with Multi-Engine Land Rating or possess a pilot and instrument rating from the armed services
  • Hold and be able to maintain an FAA First Class Medical (able to renew every six months as necessary).

Education & Experience DESIRED but NOT Required:

  • Gulfstream experience.
  • Honeywell Flight Management System experience.
  • C-130/L382 experience.
  • FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate.
  • Ten years of experience as a professional pilot with worldwide experience.
  • Gulfstream IV/V/G550 and/or L382 type rating or four-engine turboprop flight experience.
  • Over 3,000 flight pilot hours of total time.
  • Minimum of 1,000 flight hours as pilot-in-command in a multi-engine aircraft over 12,500 pounds.
