About the Role

A Research Pilot position is available within the Flight Operations Branch at NASA, focusing on the execution of aeronautics and airborne science research projects. This role involves operating aircraft carrying scientific payloads and specialized research instrumentation, collaborating with engineering and scientific teams to plan and execute flight research missions, and ensuring mission safety and data quality. The position requires proficiency in multiple aircraft and expertise in handling various flight emergencies.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or owe allegiance to the U.S.
• Proficiency in the English Language.
• Must possess a current FAA first class medical certificate or a military pilot flight physical; or obtain a NASA flight medical certification.
• Position subject to pre-employment background investigation or higher-level clearance.
• May require a one-year probationary period.
• Financial Disclosure, Drug Testing, and/or Travel Requirements may differ based on duty location.

Qualifications

• A current Federal Aviation Administration commercial pilot’s license with an instrument rating, OR a pilot and instrument rating from the armed services.
• 1,500 hours of pilot-in-command (or first pilot) flight time, including at least 500 hours in jet aircraft with at least 3,000 pounds of thrust per engine.
• One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level, including:
  • Inflight experience executing flight test techniques for performance and flying qualities testing.
  • Performing Pilot in command experience in transport or bomber type aircraft.
  • Performing flight research, flight test, or airborne test bed aircraft operations.
• A bachelor’s degree with a major in Engineering (ABET accredited programs), Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, or another field of Science.
• Alternatively, a bachelor's degree in Computer Science with specific coursework in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, including differential and integral calculus.
• Graduate degrees in qualifying AST fields are also accepted.
• Exceptional relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience, may be considered for candidates who do not fully meet the basic education requirement.
