Position Summary

The First Officer directly supports the Aircraft Captain by ensuring the safe and timely piloting of aircraft and assisting with critical aircraft management duties. This role requires strict adherence to Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company policies and procedures, contributing significantly to the reliability and success of each flight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Captain in thorough flight planning, utilizing all available weather information and reports in accordance with company standards and FARs.
  • Verifies aircraft airworthiness according to FARs and company procedures, completing necessary preflight inspections.
  • Collaborates with the Captain to ensure flights are properly planned and fueled for safe conduct in compliance with regulations and company policies.
  • Operates the aircraft safely and effectively as directed by the Captain and in accordance with FARs and company guidelines.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of aircraft equipment, applicable FARs, manuals, policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Communicates important operational factors, such as turbulent weather, to the crew and passengers.
  • Completes the load manifest accurately for each flight.
  • Supports the Captain in meeting report times, departure times, and minimum turn times to ensure reliable and on-time operations.
  • Assists with and oversees the proper handling of aircraft, passengers, baggage, and cargo while at the terminal.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance in line with company procedures and practices.
  • Presents a professional appearance and adheres to the company uniform dress code.
  • Conducts oneself professionally at all times while on duty, adhering to company Rules of Conduct and related policies.
  • Engages in continuous professional training to enhance performance and abilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the company and the Captain.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate possesses the following qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (RATP) certificate.
  • ATP written exam completion is preferred.
  • Must meet the current interview and hiring minimum age and flight hour requirements established by the FAA and the company.

Candidates interviewing with interview minimums but not yet meeting hiring minimums may be eligible for hire upon successful interview completion if hiring minimums are met within six months, no certificate actions, misdemeanors, or felonies have occurred since the interview date, and a class date within six months is accepted.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior customer service experience, particularly in an aviation environment, is preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and understand complex technical procedures and governmental regulations, including under stressful or emergency conditions. Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from management, dispatch, crew, passengers, air traffic control, and the public. Must be able to speak and be clearly understood in English, including shouted commands during emergencies.

Reasoning/Problem Solving Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and manage diverse variables in dynamic situations. Capable of interpreting multiple instructions in various formats (written, oral, diagrams, schedules). Must remain calm, think clearly, and react swiftly in emergency situations, including medical, decompression, evacuation, fire, security threats, passenger disturbances, and turbulence.

Decision Making & Impact of Errors

Makes decisions supporting strategic direction, often with medium-range impact and moderate consequences, but capable of making critical decisions in unusual situations with potential safety-of-flight implications. Decisions require sound judgment to avoid unnecessary resource expenditure and maintain safety. Must process information rapidly and react positively during unexpected or serious events. Capable of controlling personal and emotional responses under high stress levels and acting appropriately.

Physical Demands

The position requires meeting the following physical demands:

  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and/or crawl.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods without standing.
  • Capable of lifting or moving items up to 75 pounds at different heights.
  • Ability to adhere to FAA visual medical standards.
  • Ability to hear verbal communications clearly in person, on the telephone, and via headset despite ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
  • Possess the stamina to work long days on sequential days with frequent changes in temperature, climate, and weather conditions.
  • Ability to move freely, effectively, and quickly within a confined aircraft environment to perform all required functions.
  • Ability to sit in a pilot's seat or assigned jump seat with fastened seatbelt and shoulder harness without modification.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics include:

  • Working near moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions on the flight line and within open-air hangars for prolonged periods.
  • Exposure to loud noise levels, requiring headset use.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended duty periods on sequential days, including varied schedules with early mornings, nights, overnights, and weekends.

Travel Requirements

This position requires travel up to 100% of the time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays. The First Officer must be able to work extended hours with potentially little notice and lack of scheduling control. Relocation based on the company's operational needs may be required.
