Position Summary
The Lead Captain holds a critical role, reporting directly to the regional Chief Pilot regarding company operating policies and procedures. This position is fundamentally responsible for the safe, efficient, and secure conduct of all assigned flight operations, with paramount emphasis on safety, security, and quality. The Lead Captain is entrusted with exercising Pilot-in-Command authority for all flights and serves as the final authority for the safe execution of each flight.
Main Responsibilities
The Lead Captain performs a broad range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Safely operating the aircraft, including determining departure times, routes, and assessing the need to cancel flights based on weather or other conditions.
- Ensuring complete compliance with all federal, local, and company regulations, policies, and procedures during flight operations.
- Coordinating aircraft schedules and training with flight crews and Customer Service Representatives (CSRs), utilizing supplemental crew as required.
- Collaborating with the Maintenance Manager regarding aircraft servicing, cleaning, and other related needs.
- Ensuring assigned crew members accurately submit and review flight and duty records, along with all other required documentation.
- Maintaining current aircraft manuals and electronic flight bags (EFBs)/Jeppesen charts, delegating updates as necessary.
- In conjunction with the Manager of Training, coordinating crew member training and check rides in accordance with the annual training calendar.
- Coordinating time off and training events with crew members to maintain maximum aircraft coverage.
- Verifying that flight crew members report for duty in proper attire and are mentally and physically fit for duty.
- Mentoring and coaching crew members to foster their professional development.
- Conducting annual performance reviews for assigned crew members.
- Attending all required Lead Captain meetings.
- Assisting the Account Director as requested.
- Assisting in the hiring process for flight crew members.
- Implementing necessary changes as dictated by en-route conditions, ensuring adherence to appropriate company policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Conducting flights in a safe and prudent manner, aligning with industry and company standards.
- Ensuring the accurate and complete submission of all trip paperwork in accordance with current procedures.
- Establishing a thorough and complete understanding with the Second in Command regarding all aspects of flight.
- Recording all aircraft discrepancies on the aircraft discrepancy log as they occur and immediately reporting them to the Director of Maintenance (DOM) or their designee.
- Referring to the approved Minimum Equipment List (MEL) and, as directed by the DOM or designee, determining if inoperative items can be deferred or require immediate repair, completing the aircraft discrepancy log as necessary.
- Maintaining a comprehensive working knowledge of all aircraft systems authorized for operation, including all emergency systems and associated procedures.
- Securing the aircraft after each flight, including arranging hangar storage if deemed necessary or instructed by company management.
- Obtaining the most current weather reports, forecasts, and NOTAMs from FAA flight service stations or other authorized agencies.
- Filing or ensuring the filing of flight plans with the FAA or an ICAO state ATC facility.
- Analyzing area, en-route, and terminal charts for the intended landing airport and alternates.
- Performing the functions of the Inflight Security Coordinator (ISC) under the provisions of the 12.5 Standard Security Program or Private Charter Standard Security Program, as applicable.
- Conducting required passenger safety briefings or assigning this duty to the Second in Command.
- Imparting knowledge and skills to the Second in Command to prepare them to assume Pilot-in-Command duties in an emergency or upon upgrade.
- Completing and transmitting the leg manifest to operations control prior to each departure.
- Completing and transmitting the End of Day (EOD) report to operations control upon completion of each flight day.
- Actively supporting the open sharing of information on all safety issues and reporting all safety hazards and concerns.
- Making an immediate report of any hazardous action, conduct, or event to the Chief Pilot and Director of Safety.
- Understanding that while duties may be delegated, the ultimate responsibility for those duties remains with the Pilot-in-Command.
- Performing other duties as required.
- Representing Jet Aviation as a unified entity, both internally and externally with industry groups, regulatory bodies, and the General Dynamics network.
Minimum Requirements
Prospective candidates must meet the following essential qualifications:
- Possession of an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with the appropriate Aircraft Type Rating.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
- Minimum of 4,000 hours Total Fixed Wing flight time.
- Minimum of 1,500 hours Multi-Engine Land flight time.
- Minimum of 2,000 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC) flight time.
- Minimum of 1,500 hours Turbojet flight time.
- Minimum of 1,500 hours Turbine time.
- Minimum of 100 hours Night flight time.
- Minimum of 75 hours Actual or Simulated Instrument flight time.
- At least 5 years of aviation experience.
- Availability to work flexible schedules.
- Willingness to travel worldwide extensively and without any restrictions.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Work Environment

The employee must be adaptable to working in both a heavy maintenance environment and upscale customer areas. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate, with occasional periods of high volume during aircraft arrivals and departures. Employees are frequently exposed to vibration and may occasionally encounter fuel fumes. The ability and willingness to work in all types of weather conditions are essential. Hangar environments may experience extreme hot and cold temperatures during certain seasons of the year, with generally loud noise levels.
