Overview

An esteemed aircrew member is sought to fulfill a critical role at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC), supporting operations across the diverse fleet of aircraft assigned to the base. The successful candidate will conduct flight operations for NASA and its partners, ensuring the delivery of high-quality research products and the maintenance of safe operational standards. This position requires adherence to stringent Agency requirements for platform, research, and support aircraft. AFRC aircraft are primarily based at Edwards Air Force Base, California; however, both domestic and international deployments are a routine expectation for these aircrew roles.

The selected pilot will be responsible for full-time flight duties on the ER-2 (U-2) aircraft, and may also be assigned to operate a variety of other NASA aircraft, including, but not limited to, the Gulfstream III, Gulfstream IV, Beechcraft King Air, C-20A, F-18 A/B, F-15 B/D, RQ-4 Global Hawk, T-34C, and TG-14.

Compensation: The expected salary range for this position is $170,000 to $185,000. Note that this range is a guideline, and compensation will be determined based on factors including, but not limited to, job responsibilities, education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, alignment with market data, geographic location, and applicable laws.

Responsibilities

The ER-2 Research Pilot will be expected to:

  • Conduct flight operations in strict accordance with FAA regulations, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines, and other applicable directives.
  • Maintain exceptional performance standards in compliance with all applicable regulations, training plans, and Flight Crew Branch policies, emphasizing safety protocols and airfield operations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Emergency Bold Face procedures from memory, along with a deep understanding of aircraft systems, limitations, and air traffic control regulations.
  • Actively participate in all required training, meetings, and forums as directed by the on-site management team.
  • Perform all necessary tasks at operating locations to ensure the maintenance of a safe, secure, and professional environment.
  • Provide direct support for all administrative and flight operations scheduling/record keeping activities, as required.
  • Fulfill all other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain proficiency, currency, and meet annual requirements in accordance with NPR 7900.3C, NPD 7900.4D, AFPD 8700.1, and AFOP 7900.3-006, as applicable.
  • Successfully complete training and qualification checks for aircrew including simulator training provided by NASA.
  • Maintain a current NASA authorized flight surgeon flight physical.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university or college (required). A major in engineering, physical science, life science, or mathematics is preferred.
  • The ability to pass random drug screenings.
  • A current US passport valid through the period of employment.
  • Formal military training in expected duties (with DD 214 annotating AFSC / MOS qualification) or applicable civilian experience is highly preferred.
  • An FAA commercial pilot license with instrument, multiengine, and single engine land ratings, or a pilot and instrument rating from the armed services.
  • A minimum of 1,500 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) flight time (required). Pilots with at least 1,000 hours in the U-2 and current U-2 pilot qualifications within the past five years will be highly preferred for this ER-2 position.
  • The ability to meet security requirements for the position, and pass a NASA Flight Medical Certification.
  • Knowledge and experience necessary to succeed as a government contractor supporting NASA AFRC staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to create, maintain, and update briefings and statistical reporting.
  • The ability to obtain a DoD SECRET security clearance.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to perform light to medium work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, seeing, hearing, stooping, crouching, feeling, handling and manual dexterity. The role involves both inside and outside work, with potential exposure to various weather conditions, dust, fumes, and confined spaces. Excellent vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception) is necessary. The candidate must have the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and instructions, and be capable of creating and relaying written and spoken communications of various levels of technicality.

Additional Work Environment Factors

  • Office conditions: moderate noise, may require extended periods of sitting at a computer workstation.
  • Flight line working conditions: day or night work, exposure to high noise levels, long missions (up to 12 hours) at high altitude in a confined space.
  • May be exposed to altitude or physiological risks associated with flying.
