Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Pilot, the 737 Captain is a full-time, home-based position responsible for the safe and efficient operation of company aircraft. This role requires exceptional leadership, technical proficiency, and adherence to the highest standards of safety and professionalism. The position offers a minimum guarantee of seventy-two (72) hours per month.
Key Responsibilities
The Captain holds ultimate command and responsibility for the flight crew, passengers, cargo, and the overall safety of the flight. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as the final authority on the safe operation of the aircraft.
- Directing the activities of the First Officer, ensuring clear understanding of all assigned duties.
- Confirming the airworthiness of the assigned aircraft and ensuring all necessary documents are on board.
- Making critical decisions regarding flight initiation, delay, cancellation, or deviation based on operating conditions.
- Verifying the proper quantity and grade of fuel loaded.
- Obtaining comprehensive flight briefings covering purpose, weather, procedures, and special instructions, and coordinating flight assignments.
- Immediately notifying the System Operations Control (SOC) of any deviations from the flight plan, providing detailed information.
- Conducting thorough reviews of flight plans considering all relevant factors such as altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight, airport facilities, and navigation aids.
- Ensuring flight conditions meet applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) regarding weather and aircraft performance.
- Adhering to the approved flight plan or authorized flight locating procedures for each flight.
- Ensuring the proper completion, signing, and distribution of aircraft weight and balance forms/manifests.
- Promptly reporting any known or suspected FAA violations or incidents to appropriate management personnel.
- Maintaining a current First-Class medical certificate and reporting any medical condition that could impair flight performance.
- Ensuring required aircraft equipment checks, including VOR checks, are performed correctly.
- Confirming that all passengers receive appropriate briefings for each phase of flight.
- Ensuring required safety equipment and provisions for passenger comfort are on board, and all cargo is properly secured.
- Overseeing the preparation of flight logs, reporting mechanical irregularities, and coordinating with maintenance personnel.
- Ensuring maintenance write-ups are communicated to maintenance and alerting them to the aircraft's current status.
- Determining the applicability of the regulations to each flight.
- Ensuring all required Aircraft and Pilot manuals are available and current.
- Confirming the flight crew is adequately rested and properly attired.
- Ensuring the aircraft is clean, prepared for flight, with necessary stores and provisions.
- Operating the aircraft at optimal altitudes considering factors like turbulence, oxygen requirements, and passenger comfort.
- Accurately entering flight and duty times into the company tracking system or coordinating with the Aircraft Dispatcher.
- Maintaining consistent radio or telephone contact with the SOC to facilitate prompt operational communication.
- While delegation of functions is permitted, the Captain retains ultimate responsibility for all delegated tasks.
- Adhering strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and actively practicing Crew Resource Management (CRM), encouraging input from all crew members while retaining final decision-making authority.
Qualifications
Eastern Air Express seeks a highly experienced and qualified aviation professional with:
- A minimum of 7000 hours of total flying time in the operating seat of turboprop and/or turbojet aircraft.
- A minimum of 2000 hours of Pilot-in-Command (PIC) time on multi-crew, multi-engine, commercial aircraft.
- Previous PIC experience on wide-body aircraft is preferred, ideally on the B767 or B777.
- A valid FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) License.
- A valid FAA First-Class Medical Certificate.
- A valid Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.
- A valid Driver’s License.
- English proficiency consistent with at least ICAO Level 4 endorsement.
- A passport permitting worldwide travel.
- Authorization to work in the United States (US Passport or Green Card holder preferred).
- An impeccable safety and training record.
- A minimum of 1,000 hours of flight time under Part 121 operations.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and perform effectively under pressure in a dynamic operational environment.
- Eligibility to bid work schedules based on seniority (including days, swings, or midnight shifts and holidays).
- Willingness and ability to travel as required by the flight schedule.
- Ability to successfully pass drug and alcohol background checks, a pre-employment DOT drug test, and a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC).
- Candidates considered for a Direct Entry Captain position must meet the requirements of FAR 121.436.
Location
This is a Home-Based Captain position. The designated home base can be located anywhere within the continental 48 states east of Denver (including the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs).
Specific Home-Based requirements include:
- The designated home airport must be within a two-hour surface travel distance from the Captain's home residence.
- The home airport must be serviced by at least two major airlines (Delta, American, United, or Southwest), with each major airline offering a minimum of three flights per day from that airport. Flights ticketed under a major airline's name but operated by a regional feeder airline (e.g., Envoy, Piedmont for AA) are acceptable towards the minimum three flights per day.
- Eastern Air Express provides travel to and from the designated home base airport only.
- The home base assignment is provided upon hire and may be changed a maximum of once every six months, subject to review and approval by Human Resources with at least 30 days advance notice.
- The Captain is responsible for all parking and ground transportation expenses associated with their designated home base airport.
