Clay Lacy Aviation invites applications for the highly specialized and demanding role of Lead Captain. This pivotal, full-time position extends beyond the traditional duties of a Pilot in Command, requiring exceptional aviation management skills, strategic communication, and dedication to upholding the highest standards of safety and operational excellence within a dedicated Part 91 flight department.
The Lead Captain serves as a critical liaison, ensuring effective communication and workflow between the flight crew, the Account Manager (ACM), the Director of Maintenance (DOM), the Assistant Chief Pilot (ACP), and Trip Support Specialists. The incumbent is responsible for enforcing crew compliance with all applicable regulations, directives, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), while actively promoting the professional culture and ideals of Clay Lacy Aviation.

- Competitive annual salary range of $380,000 – $400,000, plus fully paid medical and healthcare premiums.
Residency Requirement: Candidates must possess the required type rating and must reside within a two-hour drivable commuting distance to Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) or be willing to immediately relocate.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Lead Captain is entrusted with comprehensive operational and administrative oversight of the assigned flight department.
Flight Operations and Compliance
- Act as Pilot in Command (PIC) or Second in Command (SIC) as designated by the flight schedule.
- Ensure strict compliance with all flight and maintenance schedules, directives, and operational requirements governing the aircraft.
- Ensure all crew members adhere to established flight and duty time limitations, following Part 135 standards as a guiding principle for Part 91 operations.
- Successfully complete pre-flight and post-flight duties and inspections in accordance with the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).
Crew Management and Administration
- Coordinate and manage crew member schedules, including vacation requests and days off, relaying approvals to the Assistant Chief Pilot (ACP).
- Monitor and evaluate crew member performance, providing feedback to the ACP for incorporation into annual performance reviews.
- Review, complete, and approve crew expense reports in strict adherence to Clay Lacy Aviation policy.
- Conduct monthly reviews of pilot currency and upcoming training or evaluation requirements.
- Facilitate the annual audit of aircraft records (black book) in conjunction with Flight Operations and the ACP.
- Ensure compliance with all fleet requirements, including SOPs and required operational paperwork.
Maintenance Coordination
- Maintain constant awareness of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events.
- Liaise with the Maintenance Controller (or DOM) regarding all maintenance-related items, including squawks, to ensure effective communication across the scheduling and account management teams.
- Assist Clay Lacy Aviation in the communication and resolution of mechanical Aircraft on Ground (AOG) events when required.
- Review monthly work orders and invoices for accuracy.
Account Management and Leadership
- Serve as the primary communicator for all trip-related changes or requests originating from the aircraft owner or charter clients.
- Cultivate and maintain positive, productive working relationships within the flight department and with all external stakeholders.
- Actively perpetuate the Clay Lacy Aviation company culture and ideals among all flight department members.
- Participate in the interview and selection process for prospective flight department personnel, in conjunction with the Chief Pilots.
- Provide constructive feedback to the Account Manager or via the Safety Management System to enhance operational efficiency in processes and procedures.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must demonstrate the comprehensive experience necessary to safely and effectively manage the Gulfstream G550/G650 aircraft while fulfilling demanding account management requirements.
- Valid Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate is required, and the Captain must remain current with all flight requirements.
- Current Gulfstream G550/G650 Type Rating is mandatory.
- Current FAA First Class Medical certificate is required.
- Proven familiarity with applicable FAA Part 91 and/or Part 135 requirements for the assigned aircraft type.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening and comprehensive background check.
