Role Overview: Direct Entry Pilot

The Direct Entry Pilot, operating within the Military Pathway, plays a vital role in delivering unparalleled flight experiences to every passenger. The individual will be responsible for upholding British Airways' high standards in every facet of their operation. A commercial pilot's life is dynamic, and this role provides daily challenges that require unwavering dedication to superior performance.

Pilots will have the opportunity to join the short-haul Airbus fleet, or (dependent on experience) the airline's long-haul fleets. Required Experience and Qualifications

Short-Haul Fleet:

  • Minimum of 500 hours of military flying time on any aircraft type.
  • Ability to secure a fATPL(A) and MCC (or exemption) before the date of joining.

Long-Haul Fleets:

  • Minimum of 1500 hours of military flying time, including 500 hours or 100 sectors on a ZFTT qualifying aircraft.
  • Ability to obtain an unfrozen ATPL(A) and MCC (or exemption) by the date of joining.

Additional Requirements

  • Recent military (or equivalent) flying experience (within the last 3 years, fixed-wing or rotary).
  • Height between 1.57m (5'2") and 1.91m (6'3"). Pilots exceeding 1.91m may require a functionality check.
  • Excellent physical fitness, meeting British Airways' medical requirements.
  • ICAO English Language Proficiency level 6.
  • Valid passport with a minimum of 12 months remaining validity at time of joining.
  • Tattoos are permitted, excluding the hands, face, or head.
  • UK CAA Class 1 flight crew medical (Military A1 status acceptable at application but a UK CAA Class 1 must be achieved before a job offer can be made).
  • Right to live and work in the UK.
  • Compliance with the Qualified Military Pilot (QMP) criteria as outlined in CAP 2254.
  • Completion of ATPL ground school and readiness to secure fATPL(A) within 18 months of application.

Applications are encouraged from Qualified Military Pilots (QMPs) who have left or are planning to exit the military within the next 18 months. Conditional job offers with mutually agreed start dates up to 12 months in advance can be extended following successful completion of online and in-person assessments. A final simulator assessment will be required no later than three months before the agreed start date.

Successful candidates will receive a company-funded type rating and join British Airways on the Direct Entry Pilot payscale. Opportunities for a fast-track to Short Haul command are available to candidates who demonstrate the requisite experience and aptitude.

Initial job offers may include the A320, A350, A380, B777, or B787 (B777 pilots operate from both LHR and LGW). Preference will be given to pilots holding a current rating on a particular type. Internal fleet moves will be handled on a seniority basis.

Note on Application Process

Candidates not successful at initial screening, video interview, capacity testing or assessment centre stage can reapply after 6 months. Candidates not successful at the SIM stage must wait 12 months before reapplying.

Only one application within the British Airways family (British Airways, Euroflyer, or Cityflyer) is permitted at any one time.

Long-haul suitability will be determined during simulator assessments. Candidates should note that A320 positions are the priority fleet due to a limited number of long-haul positions available.

Successful candidates will be placed in a hold pool. The airline extends a maximum of 2 job offers. Refusal of the second job offer will lead to removal from the pool, and reapplication after 12 months.
