First Officer
Position Purpose
The First Officer assists the Captain in ensuring the safe and timely operation of the aircraft. This role encompasses a variety of essential duties, including preflight planning and preparation, aircraft management, and communication with crew, passengers, and air traffic control.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Captain in flight planning, utilizing all applicable weather information and reports, adhering to Company policies, procedures, and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
- Conducts preflight inspections to ensure the aircraft is airworthy according to FARs and Company guidelines.
- Participates in planning and fueling the flight to ensure safe and compliant operations.
- Operates the aircraft safely and effectively during assigned duty periods, following the Captain's instructions, FARs, and Company policies.
- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of aircraft systems, relevant FARs, and all manuals, policies, procedures, and instructions.
- Informs crew and passengers about turbulent weather conditions or any other operational factors affecting the flight.
- Completes the load manifest for each flight.
- Contributes to reliable and on-time operations by assisting the Captain in meeting all report times, departure times, and minimum turn times.
- While at the terminal, assists in ensuring proper handling of aircraft, passengers, baggage, and cargo.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance according to Company procedures and practices.
- Presents a professional appearance and adheres to the Company uniform dress code.
- Conducts oneself professionally at all times while on duty and observes the Rules of Conduct outlined in the Flight Operations Manual, Associate Handbook, and other relevant policies.
- Engages in ongoing professional training to enhance performance and skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Company and the Captain.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess a thorough understanding of aviation regulations, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Demonstrate proficiency in aircraft systems and operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with crew, passengers, and air traffic control.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities, particularly under pressure.
- Maintain a calm demeanor and react appropriately in emergency situations.
Education and/or Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- Meet the minimum requirements for an ATP or RATP certificate.
- ATP written certification is preferred.
- Meet current interview and hiring minimum age and flight hours requirements set by the FAA and Company.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
- Prior customer service experience, preferably in an aviation environment.
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and understand technical procedures and governmental regulations, sometimes quickly and under stressful or emergency situations.
- Effectively present information to and respond to questions from management, dispatch, crew, passengers, air traffic control, and the general public.
- Fluent in spoken and written English, including the ability to communicate clearly during emergency situations.
Reasoning/Problem Solving Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
- Interpret and follow a variety of instructions, presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.
- Remain calm, think clearly, and react quickly in all types of emergency situations, including medical emergencies, aircraft decompression, emergency evacuations, fires, security threats, passenger disturbances, and turbulence.

- Make decisions to support the strategic direction of the flight.
- Decisions typically have moderate significance and consequences, but in unusual situations, may have a significant impact on safety.
- Ability to process information quickly and react positively during unexpected or serious situations.
- Control personal and emotional responses and act appropriately under high levels of stress.
Physical Demands
- Able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and/or crawl.
- Able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Capable of lifting or moving items at different heights weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Adhere to the visual demands established by the FAA medical standards.
- Hear clearly verbal communications in person, on the telephone, and over a headset with ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
- Possess the stamina needed to work long days, on sequential days, with frequent changes in temperatures, climate, and weather conditions.
- Move about the aircraft and perform all required functions freely, effectively, and quickly in a confined environment.
- Sit in the pilot's seat or assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened without any modifications.
Work Environment
- Work near moving mechanical parts.
- Withstand outdoor weather conditions within an open air hangar and on the flight line for extended periods.
- Loud noise levels, requiring the use of a headset.
- Willing and able to work extended duty periods on sequential days, as well as a varied schedule, including early morning, nights, overnights, and weekends.
Travel Requirements
- Travel up to 100% of the time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays.
- Work extended hours with a lack of scheduling control and be ready to report to work with little notice.
- Relocate based on the Company's operational needs.
