First Officer
Position Overview
The First Officer assists the Captain in ensuring the safe and timely operation of the aircraft. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including flight planning, aircraft management, and ensuring the well-being of passengers and crew.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Captain in meticulous flight planning, utilizing all relevant weather information and reports, adhering to company policies and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
- Conducts thorough pre-flight inspections, verifying the aircraft's airworthiness in compliance with FARs and company procedures.
- Participates in flight planning and fuel management, ensuring safe and compliant operations.
- Safely and efficiently operates the aircraft during designated duty periods, following the Captain's instructions, FARs, and company protocols.
- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of the aircraft's equipment, relevant FARs, and associated manuals, policies, and procedures.
- Communicates effectively with the crew and passengers regarding weather conditions and other operational factors affecting the flight.
- Prepares the load manifest for each flight.
- Contributes to a reliable and on-time operation by assisting the Captain in meeting all reporting, departure, and turnaround times.
- Provides assistance with aircraft, passenger, baggage, and cargo handling while at the terminal.
- Maintains consistent and dependable attendance in accordance with company policies.
- Presents a professional appearance and adheres to the company's uniform dress code.
- Exhibits professionalism at all times while on duty and observes the Rules of Conduct outlined in the Flight Operations Manual, Associate Handbook, and other related policies and procedures.
- Actively engages in professional training to enhance performance and abilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Company and the Captain.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education and/or Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must meet the minimum requirements for an ATP or RATP certificate.
- ATP written examination is preferred.
- Must meet current interview and hiring minimum age and flight hour requirements set by the FAA and Company.
- If a candidate meets the interview minimums but not the hiring minimums, they will be eligible for hire upon successful completion of the interview process if they:
- Meet the Hiring Minimums within six months of the interview date.
- Have no certificate action since the date of the interview.
- Have no misdemeanors or felonies since the interview date.
- Accept a class date within six months of the interview date.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
- Prior customer service experience, preferably in an aviation environment.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and understand technical procedures and governmental regulations, often under pressure or in emergency situations.
- Ability to effectively communicate information to and respond to inquiries from management, dispatch, crew, passengers, air traffic control, and the general public.
- Fluent in English, including the ability to shout verbal commands clearly during emergencies.
Reasoning/Problem Solving Ability:
- Ability to solve practical problems and handle diverse variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Capacity to interpret various instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.
- Must maintain composure, think critically, and react swiftly in all types of emergencies, including medical emergencies, aircraft decompression, emergency evacuations, fires, security threats, passenger disturbances, turbulence, etc.
Decision Making & Impact of Errors:
- Makes decisions to support strategic direction.
- Decisions are typically medium-range and of moderate significance, with moderate consequences, but may be significant and have safety-of-flight implications in unusual circumstances.
- Decisions may require additional resource expenditure if not sound and could impact safety.
- Ability to process information quickly and react positively during unexpected or serious situations.
- Capacity to manage personal and emotional responses and act appropriately under high stress levels.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and/or crawl.
- Ability to sit for extended periods.
- Capacity to lift or move objects weighing up to 75 pounds at various heights.
- Ability to meet the visual demands outlined in the FAA's medical standards.
- Ability to hear clearly verbal communications in person, on the telephone, and over a headset in an environment with ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
- Possess the stamina necessary to work long days, on sequential days, with frequent changes in temperature, climate, and weather conditions.
- Must be able to move about the aircraft and perform all required functions freely, efficiently, and quickly in confined spaces.
- Must be able to sit in the pilot's seat or assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened without any modifications.
Work Environment:
- Work near moving mechanical parts.
- Withstand outdoor weather conditions within an open-air hangar and on the flight line for extended periods.
- Loud noise level requiring headset use.
- Willingness and ability to work extended duty periods on sequential days, as well as a varied schedule, including early mornings, nights, overnights, and weekends.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel up to 100% of the time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays.
- Ability to work extended hours with limited scheduling control and be ready to report to work on short notice.
- Willingness to relocate based on the Company's operational needs.
