First Officer
Position Purpose:
The First Officer plays a critical role in flight operations, providing essential support to the Captain to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft. This includes meticulous flight planning, pre-flight inspections, and adherence to all Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company procedures.
Essential Duties:
The First Officer's responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks related to flight operations, safety, and customer service, including:
Flight Planning and Preparation:
- Collaborates with the Captain to develop comprehensive flight plans, utilizing all available weather information and adhering to FARs and company procedures.
- Conducts thorough pre-flight inspections to verify the aircraft's airworthiness and compliance with all safety regulations.
- Ensures the aircraft is properly fueled and loaded according to flight plans and regulations.
Flight Operations:
- Operates the aircraft safely and effectively under the direction of the Captain, adhering to all FARs and company procedures.
- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of aircraft systems, relevant FARs, operating manuals, and company policies.
- Communicates effectively with the crew and passengers, providing timely updates on flight conditions and any factors affecting the journey.
Professionalism and Teamwork:
- Contributes to on-time performance by adhering to reporting times, departure schedules, and minimum turn times.
- Assists with aircraft handling, passenger boarding, and baggage loading while at the terminal.
- Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance, adhering to the company's uniform dress code.
- Demonstrates unwavering professionalism and adheres to the company's code of conduct outlined in the Flight Operations Manual and Associate Handbook.
- Pursues ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Captain and the company.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Must meet minimum FAA and company requirements for an ATP or RATP certificate.
- ATP written exam completion preferred.
- Must meet current FAA and company age and flight hour minimums for interviewing and hiring.
Language Skills:
- Strong command of the English language with the ability to read, analyze, interpret, and understand technical documents, regulations, and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for effective interaction with crew members, passengers, air traffic control, and the general public.
- Ability to speak clearly and be understood in English, including issuing clear and concise instructions during emergency situations.
Reasoning and Problem-Solving:
- Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems, analyze variables, and make sound judgments in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret and follow instructions presented in various formats, including written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled.
- Capacity to remain calm and respond effectively under pressure, particularly during emergency situations such as medical incidents, aircraft decompression, evacuations, security threats, and passenger disturbances.

- Makes informed decisions that align with the company's strategic direction.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, recognizing that decisions can range in significance and impact, with potential consequences for resources and, in some cases, flight safety.

Physical Demands:
The role of First Officer requires certain physical capabilities to perform essential job functions:
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and crawl within the aircraft.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Must meet the FAA's medical standards for vision.
- Must have clear hearing and be able to understand verbal communication in person, over the telephone, and through a headset with potential background noise.
- Must possess the physical stamina to endure long workdays, often on consecutive days, with potential exposure to varying temperatures, climates, and weather conditions.
- Must be able to move freely and efficiently within the confined space of the aircraft.
- Must be able to sit comfortably and securely in the pilot's seat or assigned jump seat while wearing a seatbelt and shoulder harness without requiring modifications.
Work Environment:
The First Officer will be exposed to a variety of work environments, including:
- Working near moving mechanical parts.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions while on the flight line or in open hangars.
- Loud noise levels requiring the use of a headset.
- Extended duty periods, varied schedules, and potential for early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Travel Requirements:
This position requires extensive travel, up to 100% of the time. This includes:
- Nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays.
- The ability to work extended hours, often with little advance notice.
- Potential for relocation based on the company's operational needs.
