Position Summary

The Commercial Airline Pilot – First Officer supports the aircraft Captain, contributing significantly to the safe and timely operation of aircraft and performing essential aircraft management duties. This role is crucial for maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and professionalism within the flight operations team.

Essential Responsibilities

The First Officer performs critical duties to ensure the success of each flight operation. These include:

  • Assisting the Captain in comprehensive flight planning, utilizing all available weather information and reports in accordance with Company policies and procedures and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
  • Verifying the aircraft's airworthiness through diligent preflight inspections, ensuring compliance with FARs and Company protocols.
  • Collaborating with the Captain to ensure flights are planned and fueled appropriately for safe conduct, adhering to established policies and regulations.
  • Operating the aircraft safely, properly, and effectively during assigned duty periods, following the Captain's instructions, FARs, and Company procedures.
  • Maintaining a thorough working knowledge of operated equipment, governing FARs, and all relevant manuals, policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Notifying crew and passengers of turbulent weather conditions or other operational factors affecting the flight experience.
  • Completing the load manifest for each flight accurately.
  • Contributing to reliable and on-time performance by assisting the Captain in meeting report times, departure times, and minimum turn times.
  • Assisting with and ensuring the proper handling of aircraft, passengers, baggage, and cargo while at the terminal.
  • Maintaining regular and reliable attendance in accordance with Company procedures and practices.
  • Presenting a professional appearance and adhering to the Company uniform dress code.
  • Conducting oneself professionally at all times while on duty, observing the Rules of Conduct as outlined in the Flight Operations Manual, Associate Handbook, and other relevant policies.
  • Pursuing continuous professional training aimed at enhancing performance and abilities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Company and the Captain.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates for the First Officer position should possess the following qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (RATP) certificate.
  • Successful completion of the ATP written examination is preferred.
  • Candidates must meet the current interview and hiring minimum age and flight hour requirements established by the FAA and the Company.

Note: Candidates interviewing who meet interview minimums but not hiring minimums may be eligible for hire upon successful interview completion if hiring minimums are met within six months, no certificate actions or misdemeanors/felonies have occurred since the interview date, and a class date is accepted within six months of the interview date.

  • Prior customer service experience, particularly in an aviation environment, is preferred.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and quickly understand technical procedures and governmental regulations, even under stressful or emergency conditions.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from management, dispatch, crew members, passengers, air traffic control, and the public.
  • Ability to speak and be clearly understood in English, including shouted verbal commands during emergency situations.

Reasoning/Problem Solving Ability:

  • Capable of solving practical problems and managing a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize information from various, multiple instructions presented in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formats.
  • Must maintain composure, think clearly, and react rapidly in all types of emergency situations, including but not limited to medical emergencies, decompression, emergency evacuations, fires, security threats, passenger disturbances, and turbulence.

Decision Making & Impact of Errors:

  • Makes decisions that align with strategic direction.
  • Decisions are typically of medium range and significance with moderate consequences, though unusual situations may involve significant decisions with safety-of-flight implications.
  • Decisions could lead to additional resource expenditure if not sound and may impact safety.
  • Must be able to process information quickly and react positively during unexpected and/or serious situations.
  • Capable of controlling personal and emotional responses and acting appropriately under high levels of stress.

Physical Demands

The physical demands are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of this role:

  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, and/or crawl.
  • Ability to sit without standing for extended periods.
  • Capability of lifting or moving items weighing up to 75 pounds at different heights.
  • Ability to adhere to the visual demands specified in FAA medical standards.
  • Ability to clearly hear verbal communications in person, via telephone, and over a headset amidst ambient aircraft and passenger noise.
  • Possess the stamina required to work long days, sequential days, with frequent changes in temperature, climate, and weather conditions.
  • Must be able to move freely, effectively, and quickly within the confined aircraft environment to perform all required functions.
  • Must be able to sit in the pilot's seat or assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened without modifications.

Work Environment

The work environment includes conditions encountered while performing job essential functions:

  • Position requires working near moving mechanical parts.
  • Ability to withstand outdoor weather conditions within an open-air hangar and on the flight line for extended periods.
  • Noise level may be loud, necessitating headset use.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended duty periods on sequential days, including a varied schedule encompassing early mornings, nights, overnights, and weekends.

Travel Requirements

This position involves travel up to 100% of the time, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight stays. The First Officer must be willing and able to work extended hours with minimal scheduling control and be available to report to work with little advance notice. Relocation based on the Company's operational needs may be required.
