Overview
Leidos, a premier technology innovator, is currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) with Nondestructive Testing (NDT) expertise to join the team supporting critical aerospace and defense programs in the Huntsville, Alabama area. This essential role involves providing stringent audit support, technical NDT expertise, and leadership in the inspection and disposition of high-stakes manufactured products. The Inspector will be responsible for maintaining the strict quality standards required for compliance with ISO 9001 and AS9100 international standards.
Primary Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake the following key responsibilities:
- Assumes comprehensive initiative and operational responsibility for Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) functions across designated project sites.
- Maintains meticulous welder continuity records and manages detailed welding documentation databases to ensure complete traceability in compliance with ISO 9001 and AS9100 standards.
- Serves as a knowledgeable representative for Leidos Dynetics during audits, customer interactions, and internal leadership briefings concerning qualified weld operations.
- Organizes and catalogs complex welding documentation, including WPS’s, PQR’s, PQTR’s, and WOPQTR’s, demonstrating the ability to accurately interpret and apply information independent of the specific code invoked.
- Performs meticulous visual and non-destructive inspections of welds on crucial DoD and aerospace hardware.
- Determines weld acceptance against applicable quality standards and codes, accurately reporting detailed findings to Weld Engineers and documenting Nonconformances for Quality Engineering review.
- Contributes technical expertise to business proposals by assisting with weld schedules and estimating the necessary personnel hours required for project completion.
- Develops comprehensive familiarity with various industry codes and specifications, proactively challenging manufacturing processes when performance deviates from established criteria.
- Effectively communicates within a team environment to ensure seamless project execution.
- Actively assists with other engineering projects/programs and commits to professional development, including accumulating education and experience toward NDE Method certification testing.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Education and Experience: A Bachelor’s degree with 4–8 years of prior relevant work experience or a Master’s degree with 2–6 years of prior relevant work experience. A High School diploma or GED combined with 12 years of experience in quality manufacturing as a CWI may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Certification: Possession of a current AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) or Senior Certified Weld Inspector (SCWI) certification is mandatory.
- Must successfully pass a required vision and color perception examination.
- Demonstrated experience in internal audit practices, including robust knowledge of root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions.
- Exceptional communication skills, specifically the capacity to formally instruct others regarding internal and industrial weld process specifications.
- Proven experience reading and accurately interpreting complex blueprints, engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office suite products.
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and maneuvering (crawling) under supported trailer weldments for evaluation.
- Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Huntsville – North Alabama, AL area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to achieve and maintain NAS-410 Level II certifications in Magnetic Particle (MP) and Dye Penetrant (DP) testing methods, at minimum.
- Prior hands-on experience or formal trade school education in under-the-hood welding.
- Willingness to travel, typically no more than 10%.

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and is not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
Pay Range: $72,150.00 – $130,425.00
