Position Summary
The Lead Captain reports to the regional chief pilot and adheres to company operating policies and procedures. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient conduct of assigned flights, with a strong emphasis on safety, security, and quality. The Lead Captain exercises Pilot in Command authority for all assigned flights and holds the final authority for the safe conduct of the flight.
Minimum Requirements
- Possesses an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with the appropriate Aircraft Type Rating.
- Obtains and maintains an FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
- Holds 4000 hours Total Fixed Wing flight time.
- Holds 1500 hours Multi-Engine Land flight time.
- Holds 2000 hours Pilot-in-Command flight time.
- Holds 1500 hours Turbojet flight time.
- Holds 1500 hours Turbine flight time.
- Holds 100 hours Night flight time.
- Holds 75 hours Actual or Simulated Instrument flight time.
- Possesses a minimum of 5 years of aviation experience.
- Must be able to work flexible schedules.
- Is willing to travel worldwide extensively and without any restrictions.
- Is 18 years of age or older.
- Holds a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Main Responsibilities
- Safely operates the aircraft, determines departure times and routes, and may cancel flights based on weather or other conditions.
- Ensures the flight is conducted in complete compliance with all federal, local, and company regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinates the aircraft schedule and training with the flight crew and Customer Service Representative (CSR), utilizing supplemental crew as needed.
- Coordinates with the Maintenance Manager regarding aircraft servicing, cleaning, etc.
- Ensures assigned crew members submit and review flight and duty records and all other required records.
- Ensures aircraft manuals and Jeppesen charts/EFBs are current and delegates tasks as needed.
- In conjunction with the Manager of Training, coordinates crew member training and check rides based on the annual training calendar.
- Coordinates time off and training events with crew members while maintaining maximum aircraft coverage.
- Determines that the flight crew reports for duty in proper attire and is mentally and physically fit for duty.
- Mentors and coaches crew members to assist in their professional development.
- Conducts annual performance reviews for assigned crew members.
- Attends Lead Captain meetings.
- Assists the Account Director as requested.
- Assists in the hiring of flight crew.
- Institutes all necessary changes required by en route conditions to ensure the flight continues under appropriate company policies, procedures, and rules.
- Is responsible for conducting the flight in a safe and prudent manner in accordance with industry and company standards.
- Ensures accurate completion of all trip paperwork in accordance with current procedures.
- Is responsible for ensuring a thorough and complete understanding with the Second in Command regarding all aspects of flight.
- Records all aircraft discrepancies as they occur on the aircraft discrepancy log and immediately reports these discrepancies to the Director of Maintenance or their designee as soon as possible. Refers to the approved MEL and, as directed by the DOM or designee, determines if the inoperative item can be deferred or needs repair, completing the aircraft discrepancy log as required.
- Maintains a complete working knowledge of all aircraft systems authorized for operation, including all emergency systems and procedures.
- Secures the aircraft after each flight, including arranging hangar storage if deemed necessary or instructed by company management.
- Obtains the most current weather reports, forecasts, and NOTAMs from an FAA Flight Service Station or other authorized agency.
- Files or causes a flight plan to be filed with the FAA or an ICAO state ATC facility.
- Analyzes area, en route, and terminal charts for the airport of intended landing and alternates.
- Performs the functions of the In TSA Flight Security Coordinator (ISC) under the provisions of the Twelve Five Standard Security Program or Private Charter Standard Security Program as applicable.
- Conducts the required passenger safety briefings or assigns that duty to the Second in Command.
- Imparts knowledge and skills to the Second in Command to prepare them to assume the duties of Pilot in Command in an emergency or when upgrading to Pilot in Command in that aircraft.
- Completes and sends the leg manifest to operations control prior to each departure.
- Completes and sends the End of Day (EOD) report to operations control upon completion of each flight day.
- Is responsible for taking an active role supporting the open sharing of information on all safety issues and reporting all safety hazards and concerns.
- Is responsible for making an immediate report of any hazardous action, conduct, or event to the Chief Pilot and Director of Safety.
- The Pilot in Command may delegate these duties but not the responsibility for those duties.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Represents Jet Aviation as one company internally and externally with industry groups, regulatory bodies, and the General Dynamics network.
