Purpose of Position
The Pilot Instructor plays a critical role in delivering ground-based training for C-17 pilots. This position is responsible for instructing crewmembers and accurately measuring their progress within the established Training System (TS) curriculum, ensuring the highest standards of operational readiness and proficiency.
Key Responsibilities
The C-17 Pilot Instructor's responsibilities encompass a range of crucial training and administrative tasks:
- Conducts comprehensive training utilizing various devices, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), the C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBTs), and other ground training tools. Training focuses on air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures for C-17 Training System pilots. This includes diagnosing and remediating student performance issues.
- Maintains a consistently high level of subject matter expertise, instructional capability, and overall professional competence.
- Delivers effective briefings and debriefings, providing counseling to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster continuous development and maintain high levels of proficiency.
- Manages administrative duties related to training, such as coordinating with user organizations, maintaining accurate records, monitoring student progress, providing counseling, contributing to training program development, and ensuring training programs are current.
- Provides valuable input for courseware corrections and modifications, actively contributing to updates in training policies and procedures.
- Operates the WST, as required, to maintain instructional expertise and readiness.
- Flies aboard the C-17 aircraft in an observer capacity, when necessary, to ensure currency on operational procedures and to evaluate student performance in real-world contexts.
Additional Duties
Beyond core instructional tasks, the Pilot Instructor may also:
- Serve as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, staff, and during test events, as needed.
- Act as a Flight Check Airman (FCA)(Lead) when assigned by the Employer.
- Serve as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator when assigned.
- Perform Simulator Certification (SIMCERT) and Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties when assigned.
- Support project and development work.
- Periodically attend Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB), Training Review Panels (TRP), and Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings (when the FCA is unavailable).
- Attend Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required (when the FCA is unavailable).
- Fulfill Learning Center monitor duties when assigned.
- Serve as a safety representative, physical/cyber security representative, or hazardous materials (HAZMAT) representative, as designated or assigned.
- Undertake travel as required by the position.
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Minimum Education
A Bachelor’s degree is a mandatory requirement for this position.
Minimum Experience
Qualified candidates must possess:
- Eight (8) years of flying experience, including at least five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with demonstrated experience in air drop and aerial refueling procedures. Consideration may be given for an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- A minimum of two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience specifically in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
- Recent experience as a C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor.
- CATS MECOC certification is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language fluently.
- Exceptional ability to clearly convey information, both verbally and in writing.
- Proven capability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from customers and trainees.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A solid working knowledge of instructional principles and theories relevant to Training Systems (TSs).
- Familiarity with personal computers and standard software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- The ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations.
- An active SECRET Security Clearance is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the teammate is regularly required to talk or hear; to sit, stand or walk; and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls. The teammate is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; and stoop or kneel. The teammate is frequently required to ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft, work in inclement weather and temperature extremes as set forth in the Air Force and company guidelines. The teammate must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. Noise levels range from quiet to extremely loud. The teammate must be able to exit the WST by way of escape ladder down to the floor.
