Purpose of Position
The Pilot Instructor is integral to the delivery of ground-based training for C-17 pilots. This role encompasses instructing and meticulously measuring the training progress of crewmembers participating in the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Conducts comprehensive training utilizing various devices, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), the actual C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training methods for all C-17 TS pilots. Training covers air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures, with a focus on diagnosing and remediating student challenges.
- Maintains a consistently high level of subject matter expertise, instructional capability, and overall proficiency.
- Leads thorough briefings and debriefings and provides counseling to all pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster and sustain a high standard of proficiency.
- Executes essential administrative duties related to training, such as liaising with the user organization, maintaining accurate records, monitoring student advancement, conducting counseling sessions, contributing to training program development, and ensuring training programs are current.
- Provides valuable inputs for courseware corrections and modifications and updates training policies and procedures as required.
- Operates the WST (as needed) to ensure instructional expertise is maintained.
- Flies on the aircraft (as needed) in an observer capacity to remain current on operational procedures and to monitor student progress effectively.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, colleagues, and during test events, as circumstances dictate.
- May be assigned to serve as Flight Check Airman (FCA)(Lead).
- May be assigned to serve as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator.
- Accomplishes Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties when assigned.
- Assists with project and development initiatives as assigned.
- Periodically attends Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), including Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings when the FCA is unavailable.
- Attends Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required and when the FCA is unavailable.
- Accomplishes Learning Center monitor duties when assigned.
- Accomplishes safety representative duties as designated/assigned.
- Accomplishes physical/cyber security representative duties as assigned.
- Accomplishes hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties as designated/assigned.
- Travel is required as necessary for the role.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Education
A Bachelor’s degree is required.
Minimum Experience
- Possesses eight (8) years of flying experience, with at least five (5) years as a C-17 pilot, including air drop and aerial refueling experience, or is able to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- Has accumulated two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience focusing on air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
- Demonstrates recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience.
- CATS MECOC certification is desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must possess the ability to fluently read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Skilled in clearly relaying information, both verbally and in writing, to others.
- Adept at effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from customers.
- Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of instructional principles and theories specifically relevant to Training Systems (TSs).
- Proficient working knowledge of personal computers and common software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Capable of successfully accomplishing annual internal standardization evaluations.
- Must possess an active SECRET Security Clearance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties associated with this position, the teammate is regularly required to talk or hear; to sit, stand, or walk; and to use hands for finger, handle, or feel objects and controls. Occasional requirements include reaching with hands and arms; and stooping or kneeling. Frequent activities involve ingressing/egressing from the simulator and aircraft, and working in varying weather and temperature extremes as specified in Air Force and company guidelines. The teammate must frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. Noise levels encountered can range from quiet to extremely loud. The teammate must be able to exit the WST via an escape ladder to the floor level.
