Position Overview
The C-17 Pilot Instructor holds a critical role in delivering exceptional ground-based training to C-17 pilots. This individual will instruct and evaluate the progress of crewmembers participating in the established Training System (TS) curriculum, utilizing advanced simulation technology and established instructional methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging and effective training utilizing a range of tools and platforms, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training resources. Instruction will encompass all aspects of C-17 TS pilot training, including airdrop, aerial refueling/transport operating procedures, and personalized remediation of student challenges.
- Maintain an expert level of subject matter knowledge, instructional proficiency, and industry best practices.
- Conduct comprehensive briefings and debriefings, providing individualized counsel to all pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel. Foster an environment of continuous learning and skill enhancement.
- Manage administrative aspects of the training program, including seamless interface with user organizations, meticulous record-keeping, ongoing student progress monitoring, performance counseling, and active participation in training development and maintenance initiatives.
- Contribute to the ongoing refinement of courseware, recommending corrections, modifications, and updates to training policies and procedures.
- Maintain instructional expertise through regular flight operations on the WST, as required.
- Enhance operational awareness and assess student progress through periodic in-flight observations aboard the C-17 aircraft, as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, colleagues, and test events.
- Assume the role of Flight Check Airman (FCA)(Lead), as assigned.
- Contribute as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, as assigned.
- Support Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) activities, as assigned.
- Provide valuable contributions to project and development initiatives, as directed.
- Participate actively in Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB), Training Review Panels (TRP), and Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings, as required.
- Represent the organization at Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as needed.
- Fulfill Learning Center monitor responsibilities, as assigned.
- Act as a designated safety representative, championing a culture of safety and adherence to best practices.
- Uphold physical/cyber security protocols and fulfill assigned responsibilities.
- Manage hazardous materials (HAZMAT) in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
- Undertake travel, as required, to support training initiatives and organizational objectives.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Experience: A minimum of eight (8) years of flying experience is essential, including five (5) years specifically as a C-17 pilot with demonstrable expertise in airdrop and aerial refueling operations. Candidates with the ability to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver may also be considered. A minimum of two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in airdrop, aerial refueling, and tactics is mandatory. Recent experience as a C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Fluency in English, encompassing reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension, is essential.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for effective knowledge transfer and collaboration.
- Strong presentation skills and the ability to respond confidently to audience inquiries are vital.
- A deep understanding of instructional principles and theories relevant to Training Systems (TS) is necessary.
- Proficiency in utilizing personal computers and common software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, is expected.
- The ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations is required.
- Possession of an active SECRET Security Clearance is mandatory.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- The role requires regular communication, including talking and hearing, and involves sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Dexterity and fine motor skills are essential for operating simulator controls and handling equipment.
- The ability to reach with hands and arms, stoop, and kneel is occasionally required.
- Frequent ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft, potentially under inclement weather and extreme temperatures, is necessary.
- The role requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 35 pounds occasionally.
- The work environment may expose individuals to noise levels ranging from quiet to extremely loud.
- The ability to safely exit the WST using an escape ladder is mandatory.
