Requirements for a Hong Kong-based First Officer

Prospective candidates are invited to apply for this challenging and rewarding role if they meet the following stringent qualifications:

Qualifications & Licences:

  • Hold an ICAO Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) or a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with a Multi Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR), accompanied by the same state ATPL examination credits, obtained without exemption or conversion.
  • Possess a valid ICAO Class 1 Medical Certificate.
  • Demonstrate ICAO English Language Proficiency Level 4 or above.

Flying Experience:

  • A minimum total flying time of 1,500 hours is required (3,000 hours preferred). This must include:
    • A minimum of 500 hours as Pilot-in-Command (P1), of which a maximum of 250 hours may be Pilot-in-Command Under Supervision (P1 U/S).
  • Further details on the specific requirements for ATPL(A) can be found in HKCAD regulations.
  • Additionally, candidates must satisfy one of the following criteria:
    • Option A: 500 hours on civil aircraft certified for multi-crew operations with a Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) exceeding 45,000 kg.
    • Option B: 1,500 hours on civil aircraft certified for multi-crew operations with an MTOW exceeding 10,000 kg, or aircraft certified and configured for more than 19 passengers. This must include either:
      • 500 hours (including at least 250 P1 and/or P1 U/S hours) accumulated within the preceding 5 years; OR
      • 100 sectors flown within the preceding 5 years.

Selection Process:

The comprehensive selection process includes a pre-employment medical check, aligned with HKCAD Class 1 medical standards, and a thorough background check, encompassing criminal records. Applicants should refer to HKCAD policy for the full requirements concerning fitness to fly. As this position is a Safety Sensitive Role, a pre-employment drug test is mandatory, conducted in accordance with HKCAD Guidance for screening of Psychoactive Substances - Annex B, CAD373.

Successful candidates will be considered for placement on any fleet type operated by Cathay Pacific, which currently includes the A321neo, A330, A350, B777, and B747 aircraft.
