Dornier Captain
Bighorn Airways, Inc. seeks a highly experienced and skilled pilot to serve as a Dornier Captain. This full-time position, based remotely in Sheridan, Wyoming, involves operating a Dornier 228 during the 2025 smokejumper season for the US Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management, as well as supporting overflow operations for FedEx and UPS during peak seasons. This role presents a unique opportunity to work with a diverse range of customers and colleagues within a growing and dynamic company.
The Dornier Captain will operate in the challenging terrain of the Rocky Mountain Regions of the Lower 48 and Alaska, requiring proficient low-level flying skills in mountainous environments and adverse weather conditions. The duties include deploying smokejumpers in remote locations, executing low-level para-cargo drops, and performing point-to-point missions under IFR conditions. A strong background in low-level flying, ideally in agricultural operations, is essential, coupled with exceptional customer service skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members for extended periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate or completion of the ATP written exam.
- 3,500 hours total flight time.
- 1,500 hours in airplanes.
- 2,000 hours in multi-engine land aircraft.
- 200 hours in multi-engine turbine aircraft.
- 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC) night.
- 75 hours PIC instrument.
- 1,000 hours PIC cross-country.
- 250 hours PIC in large aircraft (greater than 12,500 lbs).
- 500 hours PIC in turboprop aircraft.
- 200 hours low-level flight time (below 500’ AGL).
- 500 hours in mountainous terrain (below 2,500’ AGL).
- 100 hours in airplanes within the last 12 months.
