The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the world's largest airline pilot union and non-governmental aviation safety organization representing over 79,000 pilots at 42 U.S. and Canadian airlines, is seeking an experienced Training & Human Performance Coordinator for its office in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.

As a key member of the Engineering & Air Safety department, the Training & Human Performance Coordinator serves as the primary staff resource for policy areas related to pilot training and human performance. This vital role provides essential expertise and support, coordinating activities across the critical domains of human performance, training methodologies, and human factors within the aviation environment. The Coordinator acts as a crucial liaison between the Association and various governmental bodies, industry stakeholders, trade organizations, and professional groups dedicated to these disciplines.

Responsibilities also encompass activities associated with the development, harmonization, and implementation of regulatory standards globally to enhance aviation safety and pilot effectiveness. The Training & Human Performance Coordinator collaborates closely with the ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) and its specialized groups, as well as other technical committees and Master Executive Councils (MECs) within the ALPA structure. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to advancing aviation safety and optimizing human performance for professional airline pilots worldwide.

Travel is required up to 20% of the time, with sporadic periods potentially reaching 25% for local and national engagements.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of human performance and training experience, education, and practical application.
  • Requires a minimum of five (5) years of direct experience in aviation safety, pilot training, human factors, and/or human performance.
  • Must possess established professional contacts within the international and North American aviation community.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
  • A pilot’s license with an instrument rating and experience operating various aircraft types is desired; additional experience in aviation safety may be substituted for the licensing requirement.
  • Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
  • Requires excellent organizational skills and proven time management abilities.
  • Former employment at airlines, the FAA, and/or industry segments in a relevant capacity is highly beneficial.
  • Requires the ability to learn quickly and seamlessly adapt to changing demands.
  • Requires technical writing and presentation skills to effectively communicate with Association members, Officers, government and industry representatives, stakeholders, and staff.
  • Must be able to work independently, proactively identifying and responding to issues and problems.
  • Requires participation on a rotational basis in answering calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel is required.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands are characteristic of those met in a professional office environment and during travel. This includes operating a computer, remaining stationary, moving about the office and metropolitan area, communicating with others, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and occasional lifting up to 10 lbs in the office and up to 50 lbs for travel luggage.

Projected Annual Salary Range: $ 96,027.00 – $ 137,179.00
