P-3 In-Flight Technician (IFT) Instructor – Special Qualifications (SQ) Subject Matter Expert (SME)
General Summary
The P-3 In-Flight Technician (IFT) Instructor – Special Qualifications (SQ) Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves in a pivotal role, responsible for the comprehensive development of training curricula and the meticulous execution of instructor duties. This position focuses on providing on-site mission system operator flight training, adhering to stringent Department of Defense (DoD) or Commercial contract requirements for military, foreign military, or domestic customers. The incumbent functions as a primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the training of aircrew operators, aircraft technicians, and maintainers specializing in relevant systems and subsystems.
Essential Job Functions
- Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for aircrew operators, aircraft technicians, or maintainers concerning specific systems or subsystems.
- Analyzes, designs, and develops training courses and computer-based courseware from source material, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and formats, utilizing both proprietary software tools and commercial off-the-shelf products.
- Participates actively within a work team, collaborating with Project Managers, other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Instructional Designers (IDs), and Graphic Specialists (GS) to produce high-quality courseware. Interfaces externally with customer IDs and SMEs, or DoD representatives, as required.
- Conducts various duties as flight crew, exercising independent discretion in the operation of platform-specific systems to ensure the safety of flight for the aircraft and crew. These duties encompass, but are not limited to:
- Performing requisite aircraft and equipment inspections.
- Operating platform-specific avionics and armament/ordnance mission systems.
- Troubleshooting discrepant aircraft mission-essential systems.
- Handling Search and/or Kill Stores.
- Handling Cartridge Actuated Devices (CADs).
- Operating Support Equipment (SE).
- Performing off-site aircraft maintenance.
- Provides on-site classroom instruction, practical instruction, and comprehensive evaluation of students, including active-duty foreign military personnel, within an instructional environment.
- Maintains acute awareness of International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR) restrictions concerning the export of military hardware and training services.
- Assumes responsibility for the safe handling of Government-Furnished Equipment (GFE) and Information (GFI), which may include Materials (GFM), sensitive materials (documents and equipment), and any end items utilized for training.
- Is available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Non-Essential Job Functions
- Assists in the development of training level of effort estimates for customers.
- May conduct briefings and interface directly with customers as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising Instructional Designers, Subject Matter Experts, Graphic Specialists, and Programmers to develop sophisticated computer-based courseware.
- Demonstrated capacity to utilize consistent exercise of discretion while working independently to proactively develop training materials and deliver both ground-based and in-flight instruction.
- Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with military or government personnel.
- Exhibits strong cultural awareness to provide comprehensive instructions to members of foreign militaries.
- Possesses robust interpersonal skills, enabling the acceptance of assignments and the clear communication of complex technical concepts in layman's terms.
- Demonstrates excellent computer proficiency, including expertise in word processing, graphics manipulation, spreadsheet development, database familiarity, and desktop publishing applications.
- Exhibits the aptitude to quickly acquire additional computer skills pertinent to web-based courseware development, including Javascript, HTML, JAVA, SQL/TSQL, and Access.
- Familiarity with prescribed processes required for Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI), Computer-Based Training (CBT), Interactive Multi-Media (IMI), and Web-Based Training (WBT).
- Capable of proficiently operating standard office equipment such as personal computers, scanners, printers, copiers, E-mail, FAX machines, and other required audio/visual equipment.
- Ability to obtain a security clearance when required by the contract.
- Must meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or Department of the Navy (DoN) aeromedical and survival requirements as specified within the DoD Contractor’s Flight and Ground Operations instruction, or the primary customer’s contract.
- Must be qualified or attain requalification on the P-3 aircraft as specified within the DoD Contractor’s Flight and Ground Operations, or the primary customer’s contract.
Education and Experience
- High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Graduate of the Fleet Replacement In-Flight Technician (IFT) Category 1 Pipeline course with Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) code 8262 (P-3C U III IFT) or 9402 (P-3C Update III SUW Improvement Program (AIP)).
- A minimum of six (6) years of experience in a P-3 squadron as an In-Flight Technician (IFT).
- Must hold a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) or Squadron level Instructor designation.
- NEC code 9502 (Instructor) and Master Training Specialist (MTS) designation are highly desired.
- Designation as an Avionics and Related Systems Collateral Duty Inspector is highly desired.
