Senior Experimental Test Pilot / Flight Examiner (Unmanned Aircraft Systems - UAS)

Role Summary

This pivotal position requires an accomplished aviation professional to serve alternately or concurrently as a Test Pilot, Instructor Test Pilot, and/or Flight Examiner. The incumbent acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all aspects of the company’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) portfolio, including aircraft hardware and software, Ground Control Station (GCS) infrastructure, and the execution of operational and experimental flight testing.

The Test Pilot is central to ensuring the standardization of company aircraft ground and flight operations, procedures, flight test execution, and instructional techniques. This professional acts as the primary consultant for executive management concerning all areas of aircraft development, flight test programs, and operational mission planning and execution. A paramount responsibility is maintaining the safe operation of the UAV during all phases of ground and flight activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs critical functions as an Experimental Test and Evaluation Pilot.
  • Serves as an authorized Instructor Test Pilot and Company Flight Examiner.
  • Acts as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of Company Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs).
  • Develops, plans, and executes comprehensive mission planning, briefing, flight mission execution, and detailed debriefing processes.
  • Instructs UAV student pilots and instructor pilots-in-training in all facets of UAS ground and flight operations, providing both academic (platform) and in-flight instruction.
  • Ensures stringent compliance with all governing regulations, including Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, service guidance, and internal company procedures.
  • Consults directly with company engineering staff and senior management, leveraging expertise to guide the development of the product line, including the verification of procedures for new aircraft features.
  • Develops robust training syllabus courseware, including research, word processing, and professional presentation creation.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and applicable obligations, maintaining a productive and safe working environment in accordance with established company standards.

Job Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a strong aviation background, demonstrating a complete understanding of technical principles, theories, and concepts pertinent to advanced aviation systems. Excellent organizational skills, including proficiency in planning and coordinating complex work assignments, are mandatory.

Required Experience and Education

  • Typically requires education or formal technical training equivalent to a four-year degree, combined with a minimum of ten (10) or more years of progressive experience in ground and flight test operations. Equivalent professional aviation experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on teamwork and clear verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to effectively interface with all levels of internal employees, military, and civilian customers.

Aviation Certification Requirements

The position mandates the following certifications and minimum flight hours:

  • Possession of a current FAA Commercial Certificate with a current Instrument Rating.
  • Possession of a current FAA Second Class Medical Certificate.

Minimum Flight Time (Logged)

  • 2,000 hours total pilot time.
  • 1,500 hours Pilot in Command (PIC).
  • 500 hours Cross Country.
  • 100 hours Instrument time.
  • 500 hours in turbine aircraft.

Security and Clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance is mandatory.

Highly Desirable Attributes

  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Prior experience including Predator, UAS/UAV operations, or military aviator/military aviation background.
  • Possession of FAA instructor ratings (CFI/CFII) in manned aircraft.
  • Graduation from a recognized Test Pilot School.
