Senior Test Pilot

Location: Mojave, CA | Mission Operations (On-site)

Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator engineering operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. The company utilizes reusable, cost-effective air-launched Talon testbeds to enable routine access to the hypersonic environment, delivering critical flight data for national security innovations. Stratolaunch is seeking a Senior Test Pilot to join its agile design-to-flight team.

Role Overview

The Senior Test Pilot will provide comprehensive flight test technical support for experimental and developmental aircraft and payload systems. The successful candidate will serve as Pilot in Command (PIC) and Second in Command (SIC), support ground tests in roles such as Test Conductor or Flight Test Engineer, and manage control room mission direction for FAA-licensed commercial space missions. This role involves bringing unique, complex aircraft from development to operational use.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as PIC/SIC for experimental transport category carrier aircraft, including the B747-400, and support chase and training missions.
  • Author and update flight test plans, test cards, flight reports, and Pilot Operating Handbooks.
  • Lead and participate in system design reviews, test strategy development, and ground/flight test events.
  • Participate in control room operations as a Mission Director or training officer.
  • Maintain flying currency, proficiency, and instrument currency across multiple aircraft types.
  • Operate effectively within fast-paced, high-stress environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an SETP-recognized full course test pilot school or equivalent developmental flight test experience.
  • Minimum 1,200 hours total PIC flight time, including at least 500 hours in turbine aircraft.
  • Three years of professional experience in developmental flight test programs.
  • FAA Commercial Airplane Multi‐Engine Land pilot certificate (no centerline thrust restriction).
  • FAA Second Class medical certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a similar technical field.
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) for experimental aircraft certification and operations.
  • United States Citizenship; ability to acquire/maintain a US security clearance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to self-direct and work irregular hours/travel.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • FAA Airline Transport Rating (ATP) or additional multi-engine, non-centerline thrust type ratings.
  • 747-400 type rating and FAA high-altitude endorsement (or military equivalent).
  • Six years of relevant experience in developmental flight test programs.
  • Recent experience in formation/chase flight and heavy multi-engine turbine aircraft.
  • Experience with external stores carriage, autonomous aircraft, or advanced flight controls.
  • Master’s Degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Familiarity with government flight test organizations, ranges, and procedures.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $175,500 - $230,500, plus up to 15% annual bonus.
