Experimental Test Pilot

Merlin is seeking a highly motivated Experimental Test Pilot to join the Flight Test Engineering team in North Kingstown, RI. This role is instrumental in developing a non-human pilot system designed to enable reduced crew and uncrewed flight operations. The successful candidate will lead capability testing and collaborate with engineering teams to advance autonomy systems at the cutting edge of aerospace technology.

The Role

The Experimental Test Pilot serves as a lead project pilot, driving the application of processes required to prepare, execute, and analyze flight tests. This position requires a critical eye for flight safety and a hands-on approach to problem-solving within a fast-paced environment.

  • Lead capability testing on test aircraft, supporting the development of autonomy systems through frequent flight operations.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, flight controls, integration, and flight operations teams to develop comprehensive test plans and ensure test readiness.
  • Drive the efficient collection of data necessary for system validation.
  • Execute flight tests onsite, including building and approving test cards and verifying procedures and software through simulation.
  • Support the generation of post-flight analysis and deficiency reports through robust flight test documentation.
  • Commit to up to 50% travel as required.

Professional Requirements

  • At least 5 years of direct experience with experimental flight tests, or a combination of equivalent formal training and experience.
  • Graduate of a recognized test pilot school or program.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic concepts regarding fixed-wing aircraft flight dynamics and control.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills alongside strong organizational capabilities.
  • A proactive and enthusiastic approach to supporting the success of the flight test program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience utilizing software development environments and tools such as Linux, git, and Jira.
  • Background in flight controls product development, including testing and troubleshooting at both the system and software component levels.
