Position Summary

The C-17 Pilot Instructor is responsible for conducting comprehensive ground-based training for C-17 pilots. This role involves instructing crewmembers and meticulously measuring their progress within the established Training System (TS) curriculum, ensuring the highest standards of aviation proficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts dynamic training utilizing advanced devices such as the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft simulators, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training equipment. Training focuses on C-17 TS pilots in critical areas including air drop and aerial refueling/transport operating procedures.
  • Diagnoses and remediates student performance issues, ensuring individual developmental needs are met.
  • Maintains an exceptional level of subject matter expertise, instructional capability, and overall proficiency.
  • Performs comprehensive flight briefings and debriefings, providing counseling to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to cultivate and sustain peak operational readiness.
  • Undertakes essential administrative duties related to training programs, including user organization liaison, meticulous record keeping, student progress monitoring, counseling, training development, and program maintenance.
  • Contributes to courseware improvements by providing feedback for corrections and modifications, and assists in updating training policies and procedures.
  • Participates in WST operations as required to maintain instructional expertise.
  • Flies in the aircraft in an observer status, as necessary, to remain current on operational procedures and monitor student performance in real-world scenarios.
  • Serves as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, staff, and test events when required.
  • Assumes responsibilities as Flight Check Airman (FCA) or Lead FCA when assigned.
  • Acts as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator when assigned.
  • Performs Simulator Certification (SIMCERT) and Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties as assigned.
  • Assists with project and development work as requested.
  • Attends Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), along with Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings when the FCA is unavailable.
  • Represents FlightSafety at Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC) as required, particularly when the FCA is unavailable.
  • Carries out Learning Center monitor duties and serves as a designated safety, physical/cyber security, or hazardous materials (HAZMAT) representative as assigned.
  • Travels as required to fulfill job duties.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.

Minimum Experience

  • Eight (8) years of flying experience, with a minimum of five (5) years as a C-17 pilot, including air drop and aerial refueling experience. An AMC/A3TK waiver may be considered.
  • Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
  • Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Exceptional ability to articulate information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in presenting information effectively and responding to client inquiries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of instructional principles and theories related to Training Systems (TS).
  • Competence in using personal computers and common software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations.
  • Must possess an active SECRET Security Clearance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, which involve regular communication (talking/hearing), movement (sitting, standing, walking), and manual dexterity (using hands for fine manipulation). Occasional reaching, stooping, and kneeling may be required. Frequent ingress/egress from simulators and aircraft, and the ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions are necessary. The role requires frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. Noise levels can range from quiet to extremely loud. The ability to exit the WST via an escape ladder is mandatory.
