Position Overview

Purpose of Position

The Pilot Instructor is responsible for delivering ground-based training to C-17 pilots. This role involves instructing and evaluating the training progress of crewmembers within the established Training System (TS) curriculum.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conducts comprehensive training using advanced devices such as the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft mock-ups, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training apparatus for all C-17 TS pilots. Training covers critical areas including air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures, with a focus on diagnosing and remediating student performance issues.
  • Maintains an exceptional level of subject matter expertise, instructional proficiency, and technical knowledge.
  • Performs pre-flight and post-flight briefings and debriefings, and provides counseling to all pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster and sustain peak operational proficiency.
  • Undertakes essential administrative duties related to training, including liaison with the user organization, meticulous record-keeping, monitoring student development, providing academic counseling, contributing to training program development, and maintaining training records.
  • Provides valuable input for courseware corrections, modifications, and contributes to the continuous enhancement of training policies and procedures.
  • Operates the WST as required to uphold and refine instructional expertise.
  • Participates in C-17 aircraft flights in an observer capacity as necessary, to maintain currency with operational procedures and to effectively assess student progress in real-world scenarios.
  • Serves as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, fellow personnel, and during test events, as needed.
  • Assumes the role of Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead), as assigned by the Employer.
  • Fulfills duties as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, when assigned by the Employer.
  • Undertakes Simulator Certification (SIMCERT) and Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) responsibilities as assigned.
  • Contributes to project and development initiatives, as required.
  • Periodically attends Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings when the FCA is unavailable.
  • Attends Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC) as needed, particularly when the FCA is unavailable.
  • Performs Learning Center monitor duties as assigned.
  • Fulfills designated safety representative responsibilities.
  • Carries out designated physical and cyber security representative duties.
  • Executes designated hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties.
  • Travels as required to support training operations.
  • Performs other assigned duties to meet organizational objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Education

  • A Bachelor's degree is required.

Minimum Experience

  • Possesses eight (8) years of flying experience, with a minimum of five (5) years specifically as a C-17 pilot, including demonstrated experience in air drop and aerial refueling operations, or the ability to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver.
  • Requires two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
  • Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desired.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to clearly and effectively convey information to others through both spoken and written mediums.
  • Proficiency in presenting information and responding to inquiries from clients and stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of instructional principles and theories relevant to Training Systems (TS).
  • Proficiency with personal computers and standard software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Successful completion of annual internal standardization evaluations.
  • Must possess an active SECRET Security Clearance.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk or hear; to sit, stand, or walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects or controls. The team member is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; and stoop or kneel. The team member is frequently required to ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft, and to work in inclement weather and temperature extremes as set forth in Air Force and company guidelines. The team member must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Noise levels may range from quiet to extremely loud. The team member must be able to exit the WST via an escape ladder down to the floor.
