Ground Systems Instructor – C-17 Aircraft

Purpose of Position:
The GSI will deliver ground-based academic training to U.S. Air Force and Allied Nation C-17 Pilot and Loadmaster students, assuming responsibilities previously held by Instructor Pilots and Loadmasters. Instruction will encompass classroom settings, Cockpit Systems Simulator (CSS), Core Integrated Processor (CIP) Trainer, Single Point Refueling Trainer (SPR), and static aircraft training. The GSI will also utilize the Visual Threat Recognition and Avoidance Trainer (VTRAT) and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) classroom for instruction, meticulously documenting student performance within the Training Management System (TMS).
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain expert knowledge of C-17 aircraft pilot normal procedures checklists (preflight and engine start), and related operating procedures for the C-17 flight deck control panels. Deliver training using the CSS, CIP Trainer, WST, and C-17 aircraft static trainer.
- Conduct ground-based training for C-17 crew members utilizing the VTRAT, SPR, C-17 static trainer, and NVG classroom equipment.
- Conduct comprehensive briefings, debriefings, and provide individual counseling to Pilot and Loadmaster students, ensuring the highest technical acumen and proficiency.
- Manage operational aspects of the C-17 Learning Center.
- Analyze student data, interpret results, and prepare for subsequent training sessions.
- Serve as a C-17 Aircraft Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) for lessons delivered within the VTRAT, NVG classroom, SPR trainer, and C-17 static trainer.
- Maintain the highest standards of instruction, knowledge, capabilities, and expertise.
- Maintain expert knowledge of C-17 aircraft systems and operating procedures.
- Demonstrate exceptional knowledge and application of instructional principles and theories relevant to aircrew training systems.
- Provide input for courseware corrections, modifications, and updates to training policies and procedures.
- Assist with assigned project and development work.
- Operate the C-17 TS Training Management System (TMS) and Graduate Training Integration Management System (GTIMS).
- Conduct examinations and prepare results.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Associate's Degree required; a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Associate's Degree is highly preferred. Loadmasters with a minimum of 10 years of relevant military experience are strongly preferred.
- Extensive aviation aircrew or aviation-related instructor experience commensurate with required training topics (aircraft systems) is mandatory.
- Familiarity with the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) process is desired; courseware development experience is highly desirable.
- C-17 crewmember experience and USAF-certified NVG Instructor experience are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proven ability to effectively influence others to achieve program goals.
- Fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide students with immediate remediation or to determine alternative courses of action as needed.
- Basic proficiency with personal computers and software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
- Ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations.
- Current or demonstrable ability to obtain a SECRET security clearance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The position requires regular sitting, use of hands and fingers, reaching, talking, and hearing. Occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 20 pounds may be required. Close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus are essential. The work environment is typically moderate in noise level.
