AFT-FW Instructor Pilot - PC-21 Trainer
CAE, a global leader in aviation training, is seeking a qualified AFT-FW Instructor Pilot to join its team on the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC) and Future Air Crew Training (FACT) programs in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. This role contributes to the development of qualified military pilots for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and other international defense customers, utilizing the PC-21 trainer aircraft.
Role Responsibilities
During the program's build-up phase, the AFT-FW Instructor Pilot will be instrumental in leading a team of Qualified Flying Instructors (CQFIs) in the design and development of the pilot training system. Key responsibilities include:
- Undertaking aircraft type conversion training.
- Supporting the design and development of comprehensive courseware, encompassing classroom, synthetic training device, and live flying training sequences.
- Assisting in acceptance testing for courseware, synthetic training devices, and aircraft.
- Contributing to the establishment of an integrated training center through policy and procedure development.
- Supporting the integration and testing of Information Management systems, including learning management systems.
- Testing synthetic training device lesson plans and PC21 Air Lesson Plans (ALPs).
Once steady-state training commences, the AFT-FW Instructor Pilot will maintain an instructional category as a CQFI, undertaking the following tasks:
- Delivering training in classroom settings, on synthetic training devices, and in PC-21 aircraft.
- Maintaining flying proficiency, category, and currency in accordance with applicable orders (B-GA-100, RCAF FOM, 2 CFFTS Orders, and CQFI SOW).
- Executing instructional sorties aligned with RCAF instructional doctrine.
- Successfully executing all missions within the AFT-FW syllabus, including cross-country and out-and-back missions.
- Assisting the flight commander in monitoring instructor continuity for assigned students.
- Preparing and delivering presentations and briefings on instructional topics, including A Category ground school.
- Adhering to CAF Flight Safety program and protocols as outlined in A-GA-135-001/AA-001 – Flight Safety for the Canadian Armed Forces manual.
- Supporting customer requirements for writing, maintaining, and reviewing procedures, manuals, and other documentation.
- Acting as a subject matter expert for both internal and external Operational Assurance (OA) and Technical Assurance (TA) organizations.
- Participating in routine and periodic reviews of courseware and procedures.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement and maintenance of courseware.
- Potentially performing Maintenance Test Pilot duties as assigned.
All CQFIs must be qualified to instruct students on Clearhood, Instrument, Navigation, Formation, and Composite missions as defined by the relevant training program and assigned duties. AFT QFIs will also conduct night flying using Night Vision Goggles. CQFIs may also be required to work in Standards, conduct staff development, and/or conduct QFI training based on demonstrated performance.
Currency and Proficiency Requirements
Instructor Pilots are responsible for maintaining their own and their team's RCAF currency and proficiency, including but not limited to:
- Aeromedical Training IAW CADO 5-301.
- Spatial Disorientation Training.
- Centrifuge Training.
- Escape Systems/Ground Egress Training.
- Air-Land Equipment (ALSE) Training.
- Sea Survival Training.
- Air Operations Survival – Land.
- Servicing Training for Cross-Country flights.
- Certification with St John's Ambulance in first aid training, including CPR and AED.
- Fire prevention and fire extinguisher training every four years.
Candidate Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:

For candidates with no prior military experience:
- A minimum of 500 hours of flying time in a single-pilot, high-performance aircraft.
- Possession of a Transport Canada (TC) commercial pilot's license.
- Possession of, or previous holding of, a TC instructor rating.

For instructor pilots with prior military experience:
- Demonstrated military experience with an acceptable Prior Learning Assessment Requirement completed.
- Fluency in English, encompassing reading, writing, and oral communication.
- Military or professional flying experience within the last 10 years.
- Maintenance of an unrestricted TC Category 1 medical certificate and any additional medical exams required by the RCAF.
- Body weight and anthropometric measurements must be within the operational limits of the aircraft to be flown.
Candidates must successfully pass a security evaluation according to the requirements of the Controlled Goods Directorate of Canada, and CAE must be able to obtain all necessary re-transfer authorizations in compliance with US ITAR regulations.
Desired Qualifications and Experience
The following qualifications are preferred:
- Previous NFTC Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) or PC-21 QFI experience.
- Previous flying supervisory or military flight leadership experience.
- Flight lead experience in a trainer or fighter aircraft.
- Experience in military instruction.
- Completion of the RCAF Aerospace Warfare Centre (RAWC) Operational Test and Evaluation Course or an equivalent recognized RCAF qualification.
- Verbal French language skills.
