Aviation Academic Instructor - Rotary Wing Initial Flight Training (IFT-R)

Overview of the Role

The Aviation Academic Instructor is sought to fulfill a critical role in supporting the Initial Flight Training – Rotary Wing (IFT-R) program. The successful candidate will be a proficient and highly articulate subject matter expert responsible for delivering comprehensive ground instruction to entry-level students, ensuring adherence to strict governmental and company standards, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the academic curriculum.

This is a formal, fixed-term position requiring meticulous planning, excellent presentation skills, and deep subject matter knowledge in aviation theory and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

The Instructor is responsible for the planning, execution, and oversight of all assigned academic and flight-related subjects within the established Program of Instruction (POI) and Syllabus of Instruction. Key duties are performed in strict accordance with applicable regulations, directives, policies, and procedures.

  • Instructs students effectively in foundational and advanced academic subjects for Initial Flight Training – Rotary Wing (IFT-R), including Theory of Rotary Wing Flight, Flight Support subjects, Navigation, Aviation Weather, and Basic/Advanced Instruments.
  • Plans and conducts instructional efforts, ensuring alignment with the required syllabus and POI.
  • Conducts ongoing research necessary to ensure that all assigned subject area lesson plans, courseware, and training materials remain current in content, format, and media.
  • Develops, reviews, and updates academic courseware/curriculums to support the IFT-R syllabus, submitting all changes for formal approval as required by the contract.
  • Prepares, updates, administers, grades, records, and critiques examinations within the assigned instructional areas in accordance with established instructions.
  • Prepares, updates, and presents all Lesson Plans and instructional materials, including digital and computer presentations, meeting both company and governmental requirements.
  • Provides targeted extra instruction and remediation for students identified as deficient or those requesting additional assistance.
  • Assures that all training materials, training aids, and equipment used within assigned instructional areas are properly maintained, backed-up, current, and available in sufficient quantities for optimal instructional efficiency.
  • Advises the supervisory team of needed supplies, materials, and training aids in a timely manner.
  • Provides necessary information and data for administrative reports as requested by the supervisor.
  • Attends all mandated safety and academic instructor meetings.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements to be considered for this specialized instructor position:

Certifications and Professional Experience

  • Must possess either a current Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) certificate, demonstrating that the individual has taught ground school within the past two years, OR hold both the FAA Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certificate and the Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI) certificate.
  • A minimum of three years of general aviation experience is required.
  • Applicants must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skill to effectively teach all required IFT-R academic subjects.

Instructional Competency and Training

  • Applicants will undergo a formal evaluation process, which includes delivering a demonstration of proficiency class presentation to the Academics Division Director and designated representatives prior to employment.
  • Must be fundamentally computer literate, proficient in word processing, utilizing spreadsheets for data input, accessing electronic publications, filling out electronic forms/grade sheets, and creating effective visual presentations.
  • Once hired, the successful candidate must satisfactorily complete the Common Faculty Development – Instructor Course (CFD-IC), or have completed an equivalent course (such as the Air Force Basic Instructor Course (BIC) or Academic Instructor Course (AIC)) within the last five years.

Highly Desired Experience

Prior experience as a rotary wing or fixed wing aircraft pilot is considered highly advantageous.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The role is primarily performed within a typical office environment with no unusual hazards. The Instructor must possess strong planning and organizational skills, maintain constant mental alertness, and be capable of adapting to rapidly changing technologies and time constraints.

  • Occasional lifting of materials up to 35 pounds may be required.
  • The position involves constant sitting while using a computer terminal, with the ability to stand for extended periods of up to one hour for instruction.
  • Constant use of sight, speech, and hearing abilities is necessary for communication and document review.
