Aviation Plane Captain - Expert Flight Line Operations Specialist
Overview of the Position
The successful candidate for the Plane Captain role serves as a crucial component of flight line operations, ensuring the safety, readiness, and precise servicing of assigned aircraft. This specialized position is responsible for performing meticulous aircraft handling, conducting required daily and turnaround inspections, and offering critical technical assistance and guidance to the team. The Plane Captain also provides pre-operational inspections and fuels ground support equipment as necessary, maintaining strict adherence to established protocols.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
The Plane Captain performs a wide range of duties related to the maintenance, servicing, and operational readiness of high-performance aircraft. Key responsibilities include:
- Executing required daily and turnaround inspections strictly according to applicable procedures and manuals.
- Initiating and completing all required maintenance forms and documentation accurately and promptly.
- Performing aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in compliance with established procedures and safety standards.
- Managing all aspects of aircraft launch and recovery operations, including serving as the designated aircraft taxi director and marshaler.
- Conducting aircraft towing procedures and serving as the aircraft brake rider when necessitated by operational requirements.
- Securing aircraft through proper tie-down and covering procedures utilizing established methods.
- Providing expert technical assistance, guidance, and instructional support as required to junior personnel.
- Utilizing two-way communication equipment effectively during all critical flight line operations.
- Ensuring rigorous compliance with all mandated safety programs, including Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, Hazardous Waste handling, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Maintaining adherence to all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations pertinent to the contract, facility, and specific job assignment.
- Guaranteeing the safety, security, and preservation of both government and company-owned equipment.
- Operating portable firefighting equipment safely during emergencies.
- Maintaining exemplary cleanliness and organization within the designated work center.
- Performing the full scope of duties associated with the Aircraft Washer and Plane Captain Helper classifications.
- Providing consistently courteous and professional customer service to all internal and external contacts.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements to be considered for this specialized Aviation Plane Captain role:
- Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent credential is required.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in complex aviation maintenance and/or active flight line operations is essential.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- The successful candidate must complete the training program and be formally certified in writing as a Plane Captain, with a requirement to re-qualify semi-annually.
- Required to be qualified on all assigned Type/Model/Series (T/M/S) aircraft.
- Thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling techniques, common hand tool usage, and standard operational safety requirements for the applicable aircraft.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals is required.
- Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate fluently in the English language and strictly follow verbal and written instructions.
- Physical ability to climb, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, crouch, kneel, carry, balance, and reach above shoulder level. Must be able to push or pull weights up to seventy (70) pounds.
- Required to have excellent vision capabilities, including close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to hear clearly at the normal range.
- Must obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. (Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain this clearance.)
- Must be capable of working all assigned shifts and schedules, including weekends and holidays, as operational requirements dictate.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain any government or company licenses, qualifications, certifications, and clearance requirements specific to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Highly competitive candidates may possess the following additional qualifications:
- Direct experience supporting aircraft types such as F-18 (A-F), EA-18G, E-2C, F-16, and/or MH60 is strongly preferred.
- Certification in key operational programs, including Hazardous Waste Communications Training, FOD and Tool Control Program (TCP) Awareness Training, ISO 9001-2000 Program Awareness, and Operational Risk Management (ORM) Training.
- Licensing on specialized support equipment (e.g., tow tractor, nitrogen servicing cart, engine wash cart, engine start unit).
- Experience handling hazardous materials in the performance of assigned duties.
- Demonstrated ability to use exceptional eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to use a respirator, if required for specific duties.
Compensation and Benefits
The established hiring hourly rate of pay for this position is $50.66 (Hourly rate set by Collective Bargaining Agreement / Service Contract Act).
