F/A-18 Plane Captain / Aircraft Maintenance Technician

Amentum is actively seeking highly qualified and motivated F/A-18 Plane Captains to join its dedicated team, providing organizational level aircraft maintenance support for critical U.S. Navy aviation operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. This vital role ensures the operational readiness and safety of F/A-18 aircraft.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
The selected candidate will function as a certified Plane Captain, adhering strictly to government-approved certification standards. Responsibilities are comprehensive, covering all aspects of flight line servicing, maintenance, and ground support operations:
- Directing incoming and outgoing aircraft on the flight line, using precise hand or light signals to assist pilots during maneuvering, and securing aircraft using chocks and tie-downs.
- Performing essential aircraft flight line servicing tasks, including operating service vehicles to replenish fuel and oil.
- Conducting pre-flight, through-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
- Accurately documenting all servicing and maintenance actions performed on official maintenance records.
- Checking for potential fuel contamination by meticulously draining sumps and fuel drains.
- Operating diverse ground support equipment (GSE), such as electrical power supply units, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Inspecting aircraft tires for specified air pressure and condition.
- Assisting with aircraft towing procedures.
- Maintaining the cleanliness of aircraft exteriors and interiors, as well as periodic hangar deck housekeeping, including the removal of fluid spills, utilizing appropriate tools such as portable platform ladders, brushes, rags, cleaning compounds, and mobile vacuum systems.
Personnel must be prepared for dynamic operational tempos, which may necessitate working up to 7 days per week, and potentially exceeding 40 hours, including scheduled overtime.
Work Schedule and Environment
The role mandates flexibility for shift work and the ability to travel for deployments (detachments) both ashore and afloat, particularly aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. Work is predominantly performed outdoors, exposing technicians to various weather conditions, high noise levels, and exhaust fumes. The position requires significant physical activity, including standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
Minimum Requirements
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent credential.
- A valid Virginia Driver’s License, or a North Carolina Driver’s License for North Carolina residents, is required.
- Mandatory knowledge and proficiency in the use of specialized tools and equipment necessary for assigned maintenance tasks.
- The ability to read, interpret, and apply information found in technical publications, safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance manuals, and procedure guides.
- Demonstrated capacity to be a self-motivator, capable of performing work efficiently with minimum direct supervision.
- Must be able to successfully meet all physical and medical examination requirements associated with daily assigned duties.
- Applicants must be capable of obtaining and maintaining facility credentials/authorization; U.S. Citizenship is a prerequisite for facility credentials at this location.
- Must successfully pass the Contractor Verification system, which includes a 7-year background check, and obtain a Security Clearance for Public Trust status.
- The candidate must be able to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check and favorable fingerprinting (EQIP), and may be required to complete an SF-85/86 in EQIP to maintain possession of a Common Access Card (CAC).
Desired Qualifications
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent, actual organizational level aircraft maintenance experience is highly desired.
- Possession of F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director certifications is preferred.
- Completion of military aviation maintenance training or an equivalent technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA issued Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license is preferred.
- Prior experience working within U.S. Navy aviation maintenance, specifically on F/A-18 aircraft, is strongly preferred.
