F/A-18 Plane Captain / Aircraft Maintenance Specialist - Organizational Level Support (NAS Oceana)
Amentum is actively seeking highly qualified and motivated F/A-18 Plane Captains to support critical U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations located at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team ensuring the readiness and operational capability of U.S. Navy aircraft. This vital role requires adaptability, professionalism, and a comprehensive understanding of aviation maintenance procedures.
Essential Responsibilities
The Aircraft Worker, upon achieving government-approved Plane Captain certification, performs a critical combination of flight line and organizational-level maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Directing incoming and outgoing aircraft near the terminal or flight line parking areas, assisting pilots with ground maneuvering using prescribed hand or light signals.
- Securing parked aircraft utilizing chocks and tie-downs in strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Executing comprehensive flight line servicing, including the operation of service vehicles to replenish essential fluids such as fuel and oil.
- Performing thorough pre-flight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections (PFC, THC, BRC) to ensure aircraft airworthiness.
- Accurately documenting all performed servicing and maintenance actions in official maintenance records.
- Conducting fuel contamination checks by draining sumps and fuel drains.
- Operating essential Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including electrical power supply units, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Examining aircraft tires for specified air pressure levels and overall condition.
- Assisting in the safe towing and maneuvering of aircraft across the flight line and hangar decks.
- Maintaining cleanliness standards for both the exterior and interior of aircraft, alongside periodic housekeeping of the hangar deck and efficient cleanup of fluid spills, utilizing appropriate tools and cleaning compounds.
This role requires flexibility, potentially demanding rotational shift work, overtime based on operational tempo, and mandatory travel for detachments, both ashore and afloat (including service aboard aircraft carriers).
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- High School Diploma or equivalent educational achievement.
- Possession of a valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver’s License (if a resident of North Carolina).
- Mandatory knowledge and proficiency in the use of specialized tools and equipment required to execute assigned organizational-level maintenance tasks.
- Proven ability to read and accurately interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively as a self-motivator with minimum supervision.
- Ability to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check and favorable fingerprint screening via EQIP (electronic Questionnaire for Investigation Processing).
- Willingness to complete a Standard Form (SF-85/86) as necessary to maintain possession of a Common Access Card (CAC). Note: Unfavorable background checks resulting in ineligibility for a CAC may lead to termination.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain necessary facility credentials and authorization. U.S. Citizenship is strictly required for facility access at this work location.
- Ability to meet all physical requirements associated with daily assigned tasks, including extensive standing, climbing, bending, and stooping, often performed outdoors under various weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
Preferred Qualifications
Highly desirable attributes that strengthen a candidate's application include:
- Prior certification and experience as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent and actual organizational-level aircraft maintenance experience is highly desired.
- Successful completion of a military aviation maintenance training program or an aviation maintenance technical school curriculum.
- Possession of an FAA-issued Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) License.
- Prior experience within U.S. Navy aviation, particularly working on F/A-18 type aircraft.
