F/A-18 Plane Captain / Aircraft Maintenance Technician
Amentum is actively seeking highly qualified and motivated F/A-18 Plane Captains to join its distinguished team, supporting critical U.S. Navy aircraft maintenance operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the readiness and safety of F/A-18 aircraft, operating under demanding operational tempos both ashore and afloat.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Plane Captain, upon achieving certification in accordance with a government-approved process, serves as a pivotal Aircraft Worker. This role demands comprehensive adherence to technical specifications and safety protocols, focusing on flight line operations and organizational-level maintenance tasks. Key responsibilities include:
- Achieving and maintaining certification as a Plane Captain in compliance with all mandated government and organizational standards.
- Executing aircraft marshaling procedures, including directing incoming and outgoing aircraft near the flight line or terminal areas using precise hand and light signals.
- Securing aircraft in designated parking positions utilizing chocks and tie-downs.
- Performing comprehensive pre-flight, through-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
- Conducting flight line servicing operations, including operating service vehicles for the replenishment of fuel and oil.
- Executing fuel contamination checks by draining sumps and fuel drains as required.
- Operating essential Ground Support Equipment (GSE), such as electrical power supply units, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Examining aircraft tires for specified air pressure and overall condition.
- Assisting in the safe towing and repositioning of aircraft.
- Maintaining meticulous maintenance records, accurately documenting all servicing and maintenance performed.
- Maintaining cleanliness standards for the exterior and interior of the aircraft, as well as conducting periodic hangar deck housekeeping and fluid spill mitigation using specialized equipment.
Work Environment and Schedule
This position requires exceptional flexibility and dedication. Personnel must be available to work rotating shifts, which may involve working up to seven days per week and overtime, depending on operational demands. Deployments and detachments are required both ashore and afloat, including service aboard aircraft carriers. The work is performed primarily outdoors, exposing personnel to all types of weather conditions, loud operational noise, and exhaust fumes.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must possess the following mandatory qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License, or a North Carolina Driver’s License if residing in North Carolina.
- Mandatory knowledge and practical use of specialized tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned maintenance tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to read and accurately interpret complex technical publications, safety regulations, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Must be a self-starter who can effectively operate with minimal supervision.
- Ability to meet all physical requirements associated with the position, which includes a great deal of standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
- Ability to pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check (EQIP) and favorable fingerprints.
- Must be eligible to obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system, which includes passing a seven-year background check and obtaining a Public Trust Security Clearance.
- US Citizenship is required to obtain necessary facility credentials and authorization for this work location.
Highly Desired Qualifications
The following experience and certifications are strongly preferred:
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent and verified organizational level aircraft maintenance experience.
- Previous experience with U.S. Navy aviation maintenance, particularly on F/A-18 aircraft, is highly preferred.
- Existing certifications as an F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director.
- Successful completion of a military aviation maintenance training program or an aviation maintenance technical school curriculum.
- Possession of a current FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.
