Amentum is actively recruiting highly qualified and dedicated F/A-18 Plane Captains, officially designated as Organizational Level Aircraft Maintenance Workers, to provide immediate support for critical U.S. Navy aircraft operations. This pivotal position is based at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia. The role is essential for maintaining operational readiness and requires candidates to possess a valid Plane Captain certification, obtained in accordance with a government-approved process.

Candidates must maintain flexibility for rotating shift work and be prepared for mandatory Temporary Duty (TDY) assignments, including deployment to both shore-based detachments and assignments aboard aircraft carriers (afloat operations).

Essential Roles and Responsibilities

The Plane Captain executes a broad range of organizational-level aircraft maintenance and flight line servicing duties to ensure maximum mission readiness of F/A-18 tactical aircraft. Key responsibilities include:

  • Directing incoming and outgoing aircraft near the terminal or flight line parking areas using standard hand and light signals, assisting pilots with ground maneuvering.
  • Securing aircraft immediately upon positioning using approved chocks and tie-down procedures.
  • Conducting essential flight line servicing, including operating service vehicles to replenish oil and fuel.
  • Performing comprehensive pre-flight, through-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
  • Meticulously documenting descriptions of servicing performed and maintenance actions executed on official maintenance records.
  • Operating specialized Ground Support Equipment (GSE), such as electrical power supplies, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
  • Examining tires for correct air pressure specifications and overall condition.
  • Performing critical checks for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
  • Assisting technical teams in the safe towing of aircraft.
  • Maintaining cleanliness standards, including cleaning aircraft exterior and interior, managing hangar deck periodic housekeeping, and cleaning fluid spills using appropriate equipment.

Due to operational tempo, this position may require flexible scheduling, including overtime and workdays up to seven days per week.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

Mandatory Technical and Logistical Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent credentials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and mandatory use of special tools and equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License from the Commonwealth of Virginia or North Carolina (if a North Carolina resident).
  • Non-negotiable ability to perform rotating shift work and accept assignments on temporary duty detachments, both ashore and afloat (aircraft carriers).
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret complex technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and established procedure manuals.
  • The Aircraft Worker must be a self-motivated individual capable of executing tasks with minimal direct supervision.

Physical, Environmental, and Security Mandates

  • The work environment is primarily outdoors, requiring the individual to perform duties under various weather conditions with necessary exposure to loud operational noise and aircraft exhaust fumes.
  • The role involves significant physical requirements, including frequent standing, climbing, bending, and stooping. Candidates must be able to meet all physical requirements and pass any required medical examinations related to daily assigned tasks.
  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory for obtaining necessary facility credentials and authorization at this work location.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain a U.S. Government background security check, favorable fingerprint enrollment (EQIP), and obtain an approved status through the Contractor Verification System (including a 7-year background check).
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the Public Trust level.
  • May be required to complete an SF-85/86 in EQIP to maintain possession of a Common Access Card (CAC). Failure to maintain a favorable background determination may result in termination.

Highly Desired Attributes and Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of actual and recent organizational level aircraft maintenance experience is strongly preferred.
  • Prior F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, or Move Director certifications.
  • Successful completion of a formal military aviation maintenance training curriculum or an accredited aviation maintenance technical school.
