Plane Captain
Overview
The Plane Captain is a critical role responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aircraft on the flight line. This position involves comprehensive aircraft handling, servicing, and inspection, along with providing essential technical guidance to support personnel. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in flight operations, maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational readiness for various aircraft.
Essential Responsibilities
- Executes comprehensive aircraft handling, servicing, and daily/turnaround inspections in strict adherence to established procedures.
- Initiates and completes all necessary maintenance forms and documentation.
- Conducts aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in accordance with applicable guidelines.
- Manages aircraft launch and recovery operations, including serving as aircraft taxi director.
- Performs aircraft towing and acts as an aircraft brake rider when necessary.
- Secures aircraft through proper tie-down and covering procedures.
- Provides technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to junior personnel, including Aircraft Washers and Plane Captain Helpers.
- Operates two-way communication equipment efficiently.
- Upholds rigorous compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD), Hazardous Waste management, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
- Adheres strictly to all general and industrial safety rules and regulations relevant to the contract, facility, and job assignment.
- Ensures the safety, security, and preservation of all government and company-owned equipment.
- Delivers professional and courteous customer service.
- Operates portable firefighting equipment as required.
- Maintains a clean and organized work environment.
- Performs additional duties as assigned to support operational needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required company/government qualifications, certifications, licenses, and security clearances.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, understanding, and communicating in the English language, including the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and standard aircraft operational safety requirements.
- Flexibility to work any assigned shift and schedule.
- Capability to travel for cross-country rescues and detachments of varying durations.
Physical Demands
This role necessitates a range of physical capabilities typical of flight line and maintenance environments. Candidates must be able to bend, stoop, walk, climb, push, stretch, and kneel. The position may involve working in various postures and requires excellent eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. The ability to lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds is essential. Prolonged periods of walking and standing on level or inclined surfaces are common. Requires close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment, along with normal range hearing. Respirator use may be required.
Work Environment
The work environment is dynamic and can vary significantly, from climate-controlled settings to outdoor flight line conditions exposed to extreme temperatures, wind, and precipitation. The role may involve exposure to high noise levels, electrical shock hazards, fumes, and airborne particles.
