Plane Captain - Aviation Operations

Position Overview

The Plane Captain holds a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of aircraft within a dynamic aviation environment. This position encompasses comprehensive aircraft handling, meticulous servicing, and essential inspection activities. The successful candidate is also responsible for conducting pre-operational inspections of ground support equipment and providing vital technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to less experienced personnel, including Aircraft Washers and Plane Captain Helpers. This role demands exceptional attention to detail, strong leadership potential, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Plane Captain include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing thorough daily and turn-around inspections of aircraft in strict adherence to applicable procedures.
  • Initiating and completing all required maintenance forms and associated documentation accurately.
  • Conducting precise aircraft fuel sampling and servicing in accordance with established procedures.
  • Executing professional launch and recovery operations for various aircraft types.
  • Serving as the primary aircraft taxi director during all phases of launch and recovery operations.
  • Acting as an aircraft brake rider and performing safe aircraft towing operations as required.
  • Securing aircraft by expertly tying down and covering them utilizing established protocols.
  • Providing critical technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to team members and junior personnel.
  • Utilizing two-way communication equipment effectively and reliably during operations.
  • Ensuring stringent compliance with Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, Hazardous Waste management, Egress Familiarization, and Tool Control programs.
  • Adhering to all established general and industrial safety rules and regulations pertinent to the contract, facility, and specific job assignments.
  • Maintaining the safety, security, and preservation of all government and company-owned equipment.
  • Delivering courteous and professional customer service consistently.
  • Operating portable firefighting equipment safely and effectively.
  • Upholding the cleanliness and organization of the work center to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Performing additional qualified duties as assigned or requested by management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience in aviation maintenance and/or flight line operations.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any required company or government qualifications, certifications, licensing, or security clearances.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate effectively in the English language, following both verbal and written instructions.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenance manuals, policies, and procedures.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of aircraft flight line operations, including aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools, and normal operational safety requirements of aircraft.
  • Flexibility to work any assigned shift and schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Capability to travel in support of cross-country rescues and detachments of unknown duration.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role necessitates a broad scope of physical movements and postures typical of shop, hangar, and flight line maintenance activities. This includes frequent bending, stooping, walking, climbing, pushing, stretching, kneeling, and working in various positions, which may sometimes be uncomfortable or tiring. The ability to use eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is essential. The position may require lifting objects whose weight typically does not exceed 70 pounds. Candidates must be capable of walking and standing on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the workday. Close vision, including color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, is required. Normal range hearing is also necessary. The use of a respirator may be required for certain tasks.

The work environment is diverse, ranging from conditions with minimal physical discomfort to those involving exposure to inclement weather, severe temperature changes, wind, and rain. Personnel may be required to work in areas with high noise hazards and could be exposed to electrical shock hazards, fumes, or airborne particles. A robust commitment to personal protective equipment (PPE) use and safety protocols is essential.
